I see some 8x57 JR and 8x57 JS.

Whats the difference? S&B sells both, and it looks like from their website it is two differnt cartridges.

What is the original German Mauser 8mm load, and what does S&B make thats closest to it?

The "J" is for the old-old .318" bore diameter rifles...the "JS" is the tradtional .323" bore.

The German military changed to the larger bore long ago for their military rifles...but some of the European sporting rifle makers were still using the old "J" bore dimeteions long after the change.

In a JS rifle, won't get into any pressure trouble if you were to shoot J-ammo (accuracy might suck...but pressure wouldn't be a problem)...the reverse of this isn't true.

-------
This kind-of explains why US makers down load the 8X57 round....fear of somone with an ancient old pre-WWI rifle using the larger bullet keeps the pressure low enough that even with a tight bore, the trditional US load won't destroy the rifle.

On the S&B site it says 8x57JRS, which I assume would be the same as 8x57JS, just with a rimmed case. I've seen this, 8x57JRS, identified this way, 8x56R.

There is also a Dutch 7.92x57R, used in their MG's.

Also the 8x57J originally used a round nosed bullet.
