Well, I went full Bubba last night and ended up with a pretty sweet scout mount for my old POS 91/30. In case you don't know, the 91/30 has a factory 11mm dovetail machined into the barrel that the rear sight base mounts to. I removed the rear sight base and installed this picatinny rail from DIP, meant for a Marlin .22, on the dovetail: http://www.diproductsinc.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=186947&CAT=4803
It was a pretty tight fit... the Mosin's 11mm dovetail is slightly wider than the 3/8" one this mount is designed for. Some material was removed from the DIP mount as I hammered it on, but it is a very solid fit. For good measure, I installed the set screws that came with the mount and secured them with red loctite.
As far as I'm concerned, this is pretty much the perfect solution for a scout mount on this rifle. It is extremely solid, and the rail height is very low, allowing the optic to be very low over the bore, requiring no raised comb to get proper cheek weld. I threw a cheap 2.75x pistol scope on it to try out. We'll see how she does next time I get to the range.
