Anyone know what the xtr means? best i can tell its for the ones with a higher polish & blue and better grade wood with a glossier finish.only thing i have found so far on this subject is just ppl guessing. Its a 1978 winchester 9422m xtr i picked up 20 years ago.

Maybe it means "extra fancy stock finish"? lol

I really don't know, but they really look pretty. They are high quality little .22s, smooth as silk action - here's my 9422 XTR (lr):

Everyone assumed at the time it meant "Extra' as in better finish, wood, etc.

I don't think I ever saw an official Winchester explanation for it.

Problem is, by the time they got the 9422 XTR extra pretty?

The old tooling was worn out, and USRA was on the ropes and could't afford to replace it.

And they weren't made nearly as well as the old plain Jane ones that looked just like a plain Jane Pre-64 1894 30-30.

I have a 1972 9422 serial #42xx, and a 1972 9422M serial # 63xx that I'll put up against anything they made when the XTR versions came out there towards the end.

My older (80's vintage) XTR is also a "Hi-grade" and it is exceptionally tight, well blued and perfectly fit. My one complaint is the glossy finish on the stock. I would have preferred oiled finished wood.

My only suggestion if you are looking at an XTR is "get while the getting is good". I have been slowly looking to pick up another 9422 as I love mine and want a backup.
