I recently acquired a 243 sporter with a GEW 98 Mauser. :D This unit has the original trigger (I think) and the trigger comes down in the middle of the trigger guard and is not easy to reach/pull - I HATE IT. All my other 98 sporters have the trigger further back toward the rear of the trigger guard, which I prefer. I have provided pictures of the 243 (GEW98 action and stock trigger) as well as my 270 (Karab 98B) with what I believe is a Timney adjustable trigger (no markings anywhere). These pictures show the differences in the triggers. Basically, the Tinmey is set back further than the stock trigger.

I see that Brownells has the Timney sportsman which looks very similar to the trigger on my .270 as shown in pictures. My question is: Will the timney sportsman on this link fit in my 243 with the GEW action? http://www.brownells.com/rifle-part...-specs-for-fits-sku883100298-13130-31670.aspx

At the above URL, there are 2 options:
The one I believe I want:
883-100-298WB
M98-FN-SP Trigger, see specs for fits
Mfr Part: 101

And the one specifically for a GEW action:

883-100-398WB
M98-K-SP Trigger fits Mauser 98K Gew Military
Mfr Part: 102

Although I "think" that the 98's are universal, I wanted to be sure before I order the trigger. Thanks guys...

If you're going old school , this:

If more modern a Timney or BOLD unit will work fine, and set the trigger further back.

According to the info on the MidwayUSA, the two different 98 triggers are for most normal 98s (Mfr Part: 101) and for the Kar98/A/AZ(Mfr Part: 102), which is slightly different than the M98 and derived actions. The GEW98s are part of the normal group along with almost every other 98 out there. The 883-100-298WB part from brownells is the correct one.

I've got a Timney sportsman, a few BOLDs, and a Dayton Traister mark II on my various Mausers. They're all much better than stock by a long shot.

I'd love to have a single set-trigger like headoftheholler shows, but I'm not quite that fancy yet. :)

ETA: I believe that the Kar98B is made from repurposed GEW98 actions between WW1 and WW2, so you should have two GEW98s. :)

OK, this makes sense, but it appears that this trigger has the same contour as my current one and will not solve the issue of the trigger being too far forward. In addition to improving the trigger pull, I also want to set the trigger back further toward the rear of teh trigger guard...

I guess I'll try to fit the Timney from my 270 to the 243 and see if it bolts in...

If you look at the relationship of the trigger to the rear receiver screw boss on both rifles, you'll see that the trigger on the 270 is about 3/8" farther back than the stock trigger on the 243. That's where I would expect the timney to sit. The profile of the trigger is about the same in terms of curvature, but it is moved rearward significantly. You may have to open up the trigger opening in the trigger guard to accommodate it.

what headoftheholler has in his picture. it has two triggers, one is regular, then If you pull the front one, the back one becomes "match" grade. Someone should be around here to give a better explanation.

I was going to recommend a double set trigger too. I don't know if they're made by anyone other than Mauser, but all that I have seen are fantastic. I had one on an 8X60S (that I sold, dammit) and have one now on a 6.5-06. I just love them, and they're well back in the trigger guard.

If you are building a classic styled custom its hard to beat the double trigger setup. The main setback for it is you either have to buy a trigger guard with one already installed or mill out your own. Both can be found on ebay and NECG sell new ones. I have a single timney on my swede sporter and its a great trigger but pales in comparison what I can do with the pictured double set. On say a snap shot on running game you simply pull the front trigger and the gun goes bang with a 3-4 lbs trigger pull, on more relaxed rested shots you first pull the rear trigger to "set" the front trigger which will now release at 4 oz. which does wonders for accuracy. Hard to beat the looks of it as well.

Hmmm, I like the suggestions on the double trigger setup. Is there a particular brand of these that is better than another? Aside from opening up the trigger guard, does this require a gunsmith to install, or can a mechanic like me git-r-dun?

Installation is little more than lengthening the port the trigger goes down into on the trigger guard and securing it with two pins.
Usually on ebay the complete trigger guard with dual trigger set up + kickoff piece sells for $200 give or take, I've seen just the double trigger unit go for $100 or so.
