Has anyone found loading data (or has experience) trying to duplicate the factory 124+P Gold Dot using Silhouette powder? I have a pound of Silhouette and think its low-pressure and flash-suppressed properties would make a good match for this load. The data I have found is all over the place; listing anywhere from 5.0 to 5.9 grains max loads for 124gr bullets (none of which are Gold Dots).

I don't have the latest Speer manual; if it is in there, that would be a good excuse to buy one I suppose... :)

After finally actually buying some Silhouette and not just thinking about it, I recently tried it with the Speer 124 Gr Gold Dot. The 124 Gr Gold Dot proved very accurate in all three guns, and my EMP can be a little finicky. It hates 115 Gr stuff.

5.7 Grs Silhouette. WSP primer. Loaded @ 1.120 OAL. 102 Degrees. 38% RH.

3" EMP:..Hi=1130..Lo=1010..Avg=1064..ES=120..SD=54

5" S&W Pro 1911:..Hi=1284..Lo=1135..Avg=1202..ES=149..SD=63

16" RRA AR:..Hi=1280..Lo=1241..Avg=1263..ES=39..SD=16

Pretty big ES & SD numbers. A fluke that day? Not particularly good velocity from the EMP either. The 16" barrel calmed the ES & SD down, but still gave so so velocity.

So I tried N340, which has done very well in the 3" EMP in the past, and still gave good velocity in the AR, although not quite the velocity in the AR as what HS-6 or AA #5 did.

5.7 Grs N340. WSP primer. Loaded @ 1.122 OAL. 104 Degrees. 35% RH.

3" EMP:..Hi=1107..Lo=1071..Avg=1089..ES=36..SD=11

5" S&W Pro 1911:..Hi=1223..Lo=1205..Avg=1212..ES=18..SD=6

16" RRA AR:..Hi=1321..Lo=1302..Avg=1308..ES=19..SD=6

Use these loads at your own risk. Check data and follow it. This is merely an example to show some velocities.

I just got through testing a couple of five shot strings out of my Glock 26. My ES figures were much better than what you experienced:

5.4 grains Silhouette, 124gr Gold Dot, 1.10 OAL
High 1037
Low 1014
Avg 1026
ES 40

5.7 grains Silhouette:
High 1122
Low 1114
Avg 1118
ES 8

The velocity of the 5.7gr load seems to be similar to your experience in your EMP. Maybe Silhouette isn't the best short barrel load (?)

FYI, factory Gold Dot +P+ averaged a much-hotter 1242fps that felt like they were going to cause a KaBoom when I set them off.

CAUTION: Use reload data at your own risk. This is merely an example to show some velocities.

I am a big fan of Silhouette for 9mm, it makes a great accurate target load at 5.4 - 5.5 grains under a 124gr bullet. I did some testing with an XDm compact (3.8" barrel) and XTP's for SD and had excellent results. Ramshot lists 5.9 as max so I worked up to that, my numbers werent much higher than yours with 5.7 so it may be a waste of powder to go much higher. I dont have all my data in front of me but avg velocity was 1124fps. I use CCI small pistol primers with SD loads in 9mm. Some time ago several more experienced reloaders told me that they have had slightly better results when using CCI primers in smaller cases such as the 380 and 9mm. I did a little testing of my own and while the difference was minimal it was there.

I like 5 grains of S under a 124XTP loaded to 1.060" OAL. Slow but accurate. I think S is better for 147s. I like a Zero 147JHP over 5 grains of S loaded to 1.130".
