I'm looking for a 9mm handgun for the range, I love .45 but I'm going with 9mm because its cheaper to shoot while still being reasonable for defense. I've had a long love affair with M1911s and am considering getting an M1911 in 9mm, maybe something from STI, definitely a Springfield Loaded Target 9mm if I can find one, or a Kimber Stainless Target II. Recently though, the Springfield XD(M) Competition has caught my eye, its attractive in a way that few polymer pistols have managed to be. Its also easy for me to acquire as my local FFL has several in stock. So, should I wait on a 9mm 1911 or jump on the XD(M) Competition model?

The advantage of the 1911 is that you'll likely get a better trigger. The XDm 5.25 Competition 9mm is an excellent pistol design but it doesn't come with a competition tuned trigger. You'll have to do that yourself or send it to someone who can do it for you. I have an XDm .45 ACP and I installed a Match Target trigger in it and it is excellent. Take-up is minimal with very little reset and no over-travel. Cost me about $100. Just thought I'd let you know. I'd go with the XDm 5.25 but I would add another $125 for Powder River Precision's Ultimate trigger kit or plan on sending it to Powder River for the work. The kit is reasonably easy to do yourself if you have the mechanical aptitude. You might want to visit XDTalk and ask around there. ;)

I had a Sprigfield Target 9mm which was very reliable but would not group well. After two trips to the factory I finally sold it and acquired a Dan Wesson PM-9 (one inch groups at 50 ft).
