9x19
9mm parabellum
9mm Luger

Are all diffrent names for the same thing. Anything else is suspect!

Generally speaking though folks say 9mm in reference to 9mm Luger

posted via mobile device.

9mm=9x19mm=9mm NATO=9mm Luger=9mm Parabellum. All the same cartridge. .355 in diameter, generally. You can have 9mm+P (more pressure and velocity), +p+, and so on. To answer the question I think your asking, though, yes, it's the same. Note: There are indeed other 9mm cartridges, but they are noted differently, ie; 9x21, 9x18, etc.

NOT the same.

"9mm Luger" denotes a specific cartridge.

"9mm" is simply stating a bore diameter.

Same? Most of the time but by no means always.

Generally yes but in the bigger picture no, they can not be counted on being the same.

You can have:
Ultra
Kurtz
Police
x21
x23
x23 Largo
x23 Steyer
x25
Winchester magnum
and a whole host of others.

Puh-leez. :D

If I say "Obama" are you going to assume I mean our president...or Joe Obama whom I used to play pick-up ball with?

"9mm" means 9mm Luger (and all the other names for the same cartridge). Anyone who means any other cartridge with a 9mm bullet will either refer to it using a term other than "9mm"...or will be misunderstood.

GENERALLY "9 mm" refers to 9mm Para or Luger, BUT not always. The below comes from wiki, but correctly points out that what we call "380" is actually a 9 mm short or 9mm Kurz..

The .380 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) ..... Other names for .380 ACP include 9mm Browning, 9mm Corto, 9mm Kurz, 9mm Short, and 9×17mm. It is not to be confused with .38 ACP or 9mm Luger.

I have both and carry the 380 daily. :)

9mm is not a cartridge, it is an approximate bore diameter

A 9mm MAK or 9x18 is a different bore diameter (0.363 inches) than a 9mm Luger or 9x19 (0.355)

Please do not just use 9mm, it could cause problems and 9mm is not normally a stand in for 9mm Luger.

Very true, I never have a problem anyone ever asking me that question and I never tell anyone that wants to buy a "9mm" pistol that 9mm is the std. Be specific when someone asks that question, there are too many variants out there.:)

Has anyone gone to buy ammo, asked for 9mm ammo and been given anything except for 9mm Luger?

By common terms, they are about as close to synonymous as one can get without being a perfect match.

Honestly, have you ever walked into a gun shop and asked for "9mm" and been offered a box of 9mm Kurtz, 9x18 Mak, or a 9mm Winchester Magnum? Its true there are lots of "9mm" rounds, but the 9×19mm Parabellum is so overwhelmingly more popular that it has pretty much co-opted the label "9mm"

Heh, my buddy, new to guns, told me he was getting a new Luger 9mm. Turns out it was actually a Sig!

Had to give him a quick explanation of 9mm variants.

And this.

kinda like twenty-two; If you mean anything other than .22 Long Rifle, you need to specify, because that is what will be assumed otherwise.

The more you know the more you know that:
1) Saying I have/need/want a "9mm" means 9mm luger (and all names used for it) to 99% of the US population
2) If you are talking about something other than 9mm luger you don't just state "9mm" because 99% will misunderstand you

If you live outside the US it could be different. Regardless, IMO, some folks get caught up too much in trying to show how much they know. I like to keep things simple and this approach gets it done most of the time for me with most of the people I choose to interact with.

I'm not a hand gunner, that's why I asked. The reason I asked is that I found a handfull of 9mm once but then I also found some with a Luger stamp and wondered if a guy can use the same brass to reload for a 9mm and use it in any 9mm handun. It was simply idle curiosity. Thanks for clearing that up.

I don't have any trouble buying a Glock magazine when I ask for a Glock clip, either; but somebody on the internet will be quick to correct me.

While you will surely be handed 9mm Para ammunition if you ask for "a box of 9mms" that could be a problem if you owned one of the less common pistols in some other 9mm calibre.
Asking for 9mm when you want 9mm P and getting 9mm Steyr is not likely. The other way 'round might happen.

Oh, and by the way, fellow nitpickers, 9mm (.3543" usually rounded up to .355") is NOT the BORE diameter of a nominal 9mm barrel. That is the bullet and low tolerance groove diameter. The BORE diameter is .346" or 8.79mm. Which is probably why my Luger was stamped "8.8" because they checked the BORE with a plug gauge at the proof house.
There are many more Internet Examples of misuse of the term "bore diameter."

9mm/9mm Luger

Is there a difference between the two? If so, what is it?

This was the question, not "will I generally get the right ammo if I just ask for 9mm?"

The original question, correctly answered, specifies the difference, as I did in Post #6 and Brian Williams did in Post #12

Jim Watson I don't have any trouble buying a Glock magazine when I ask for a Glock clip, either;
Don't care what you call it, but I will ask what model it is so I sell you the right one.:neener:

Mmmmmmmm...nah.

You should have said 9mm is a length. That way, the answer has nothing at all to do with guns or ammo--so it must be right.

Now, I have a question about .38 and .38 Special....;)
