I own a Ruger 22 pistol and am wanting to buy a centerfire pistol. I was looking at a 9mm and was confused buy all the different ammo. I was looking on the internet and saw 9mm, 9 x 19 and another 9mm different than the luger. Is it safe to shoot all of these out of the same gun or are they designed for different guns. I couldn't find anything doing a search. I'm sure you could also tell by the question that I am new at this. Thanks in advance for all your help with this.

No

Lugar, Parabellum, and 9x19 are all names for the same round and the most common 9mm ammo. But there are many other 9mm rounds: 380ACP is also know as short or 9mm Kurtz, and cannot be used in a 9x19 pistol. The 9mm Makerov (sp) is larger in diameter than the first two 9mm above.
Strum Ruger Co. as far as I know only makes a 9x19 pistol. I hope that makes things clearer. P5

9mm, 9mm Parabellum, 9mm Luger, and 9x19 are the same. What you want to watch out for are 9mms marked as different than these, such as 9x18 or 9mm Kurz.

This thread can probably answer you question better than I can.

Thanks everybody, that helped a lot. The Makerov was the other one that I couldn't remember. Thanks again for your help,
Rusty
