I know this is a simple question. I tried using the 'search' function, no results.
I am taking a gun safety class. A law enforcement firearm safety class at my local community College. I have a Beretta 92fs 9mm
The class requires 500 rounds of ammo that the students must purchase themselves. (bummer) :(
It must be 'Non Lead Frangible' ammo.
I did an online search. The cheapest I found was at 'Dans Sporting Goods' online.
Fiocchi 9mm frangible, lead free. 1000 rounds for $379. (plus $41 shipping) .

The Federal brand is a lot more.
,, so I am basically asking what the best 9mm ammo is and , what is the difference between,
-Makarov 9mm
-9mm luger
-9mm rifle?

sorry for the elementary questions. I did use the search function first.

The Fiocchi should be fine if it's the cheapest you can find and would try to buy only the five hundred rounds needed for the class. Unless the range you will be shooting at after the class requires the frangible you can get much cheaper for FMJ for practice.

I personally use Federal HST 147 gr. for a defensive load and Federal 124gr. fmj for target practice. It has the same impact point as my carry ammo and is under ten dollars for 50 rounds at Walmart.

Your Beretta fires 9x19 which is also referred to as 9mm, 9mm luger and 9mm parabellum.

9mm makarov measures 9x18mm and I think is also called 9mm russian.

380acp also measures 9x17mm and is also called 9mm short and some other names.

I'm not sure about 9mmrifle but it could either be 9x25mm or some other 9mm russian round.

This may not help you at all, but...

Town Police Supply in Collinsville VA for the last 2 weeks has had Federal BallistiClean RHT (Frangible) 9mm for $9.95/box of 50. He has/had a 10 box limit, but that would get you your 500 rds for your class @ 19.9 cents a round (not including shipping).

Now I have no idea if he would/does ship or whether he'd want to mess with a California order, but it never hurts to try-just use the toll free number at the website (which isn't hitting on much). You could ask the person at the toll free number to transfer you to someone at the ammo section and ask if they still have it on sale, and if they'll ship (and for how much)? If it doesn't work out at Collinsville, you might try their Richmond store (I know nothing 'bout them).

I made a couple of trips to load up on the 9mm frangible-darn good price, you rarely see frangible on the floor, and they're just up the road from me.

9mm Makarov is a unique cartridge, between the .380 ACP and 9mm Luger in both case size and power. It has its origins in the formerly communist eastern bloc of Europe. 9mm Luger, aka Parabellum, aka 9X19, is a common military (in the US and NATO), police and civilian self defense cartridge. "9mm rifle" is the same cartridge, only fired in rifles. This is the one you will want.

Wow, that seems like a good deal

If I am doing my math right, that is $100 for 500 rounds.
I think that is the way I will go. I was going to split a box of 1000, but everyone else in the class has either .45 or .40 or .38 .
So I'm just going to get 500. Thanks I will try that place and see if they have any left. That price blows everyone else's out of the water. Thanks everyone for all the other info.

It was (is?)-hope they can help you out!

I make a police supply house loop 'bout once a month-you just never know what kind of deals/overstocks/agency returns etc you'll run across.

Do your homework-I avoid 20/25 rd SD ammo for consumers, buying most all of my SD ammo at police supply places. If you're located somewhere that has a few of 'em close, you might consider doing the same?

BTW-if they help you out, they also had Federal 9BPLE 9mm +P+ on sale for $23.99/50. Not great, but not a bad price on some SD ammo that can be hard to find. 'Course, being new I don't know that you want to mess with +P+ at this stage of the game?
Iff'n you want/need some and they can help you out, you might wanna toss a few of them in your order?

EDIT: Was browsing Town's pitiful website, and I notice they have a shipping section (guess this would cover ammo?).
I figured they had to do some shipping since they sell to LE agencies.

TPS won't ship to CA

Why won't they ship ammo to California? What is up with that? I am totally bummed out about this. It is twice as expensive here in California. It is still legal to ship to California. As of today

Talk to your state Legislature in California and they will tell you why you will have to buy it from an ffl store or Wal-Mart. If I am not mistaken,I think your new laws start in February of 2011 and that is one of the reasons why. rich642z

Fiocchi is pretty good stuff, I have shot it for years without any problems. IMHO its a good step up from Walfart UMC or surplus.

To moh2o:

Because California is FULL of anti gun politicians. Since they are having a hard time completely banning guns in Commieland they will just make the ammo so expensive to buy. Kind of a round about yellow back stabbing way of doing it, but that's Commie politicians for you.

You can thank them for the upcoming micro-stamping thing as well.

There is good news Arizona and Nevada are not too far away.

The OP needs frangible ammo and that's the crux of the problem for him.
Frangible is so expensive because of the low demand. In time it will be commonplace and available at reasonable prices.
The reason some sellers (actiually quite a few) won't sell anything to Cali is they would be required to constantly check every order against the "ship/no-ship" list of approved and unapproved products. For most it's just not worth the hassle to have a person dedicated to provide such a service.
I certainly hope the OP can get his supplies in time and affordably so.

TPS won't ship to CA
Sorry 'bout that-I thought it was still legal to ship to CA, but some folks just don't want the hassle.

Was the frangible still on sale? How long before you need it?

Hey everyone, thanks a lot for the info. Well it is not just TPS that won't sell to Cali, everyone I called online. I wanted to support Arizona with some of my business so I googled the major gun stores in Pheonix, AZ. None of them would ship to california either. A freind of mine told me that Cheaper than Dirt will though, and Ables ammo.
I just wanted to exercise the right to obtain ammo here, before the government tries to take it away.
Hey Basicblur, yeah, I called the TPS store in Collinsville, VA (the headquarters) and they said they are still selling the frangible 9mm Federal RHT. That is a really good price 9.95 for a box of 50.
The class I am taking has a list of local ammo sellers, one in particular that makes it on the premises 'X-Load', they want $215+ tax for 500 rounds of Frangible non-lead 9mm.
A friend of mine told me to try 'Ables ammo.com'.
The class starts on Sept. 14th, and students MUST have the required 450 rounds at the beginning day of the class.

Anyone with any ideas or if you know of anyother places similar to Town Police Supply in VA. Hey let me know soon. The prices on ammo are way better over there and interstate commerce is good for business. That is the way America should be,,,,,,,FREE! Free to do business, free to work for a living,, that is what I do, I have worked all my life. I just want to work an honest day, and get an honest deal. Thanks in advance bros,

I had the same quset in europe (althoug limited to FMJ or Full Metal Jacket) because we can't have frangible ammo in handguns over here.
didn't like the winchester (loud, brutal and dirty), magtech is ok, S&B and Fiocchi are very nice and currently i'm firing Geco, which is Swiss and provides for a lot of governments in Europe.
Fiocchi is very "clean".
I do like 124 grs better than 115 grs.

What about Streichers Police Supply? Do they carry frangible ammo? If they do I don't know if they will ship to CA, but it's worth a shot.

"Sorry 'bout that-I thought it was still legal to ship to CA"
It is still legal. People just don't want to do it.
People should ship to California, I will tell you why. If we don't exercise our rights then our rights will be taken away. Those against interstate ammo shipping will say, ' See no one wants to ship to Cal. anyways, so we should just remove the right for them to have ammo anyways'.
Ok , well some may say , we don't give a damn what happens to California. Mistake. I guarantee you that what ever happens to Cali. will happen to the rest ,,,,,,eventually. It is only a matter of time. The object of the globalists is to 'divide and conquer' , no matter what it takes. Those who don't want to ship to California are basically saying, we agree with the legislation to ban interstate ammo trade to california.

It will come back to bite you in the long run. Your state is next. It is like a tear in a garment, once it starts is keeps on tearing. You don't let it start.

Because of the California's stupid laws restricting the importation of certain items, many out of state companies find is simpler not to do business with California at all. There are several non-California companies that have targeted California as a place to do business just because of this. Go go the vendor forum or look at the forum advertisers at

www.Calguns.net

You should be able to find someone who will ship you the ammo you need.

Also, you need to join the Calguns Foundation and the California Rifle and Pistol Association to help fight the laws that restrict the importation into California. There's a new ammo law going into effect in 2011 that restricts ammo purchases to 50 rounds a month and no importation into the state. It's already law. We just need to get rid of it.

I like the RWS orange box at Wal-Mart. About $12 a box and it's loaded to NATO specs, makes my Hi Point 995 very happy.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but would it be legal for let's say someone on here that doesn't live in Cali to purchase the ammo and then to ship it to moh20???

I don't think it's illegal to ship ammo from one person to another in different states.?!?.

You could try to just go across state lines and buy. Or maybe have an out of state friend run some ammo in. I think that is entirely legal. Idk, I had some CA "safe" guns set aside to take with me for when I visit family there, but now I don't even want to risk it, much less go back.
