Putting together a 9mm load for tomorrow at the range, when I came across something odd.

I wad working the OAL using the plunk test, and I got all the way to 1.2 - that's the longest OAL I can use in my magazines - but it still passed the plunk test.

Seems odd to me since everything else seems to be 1.10 or close to it for 147.

Never used this bullet profile before, previously used only 147 RN berrys plated which IIRC I loaded to 1.14. and 5.0 of HS6

Will be loading with HS-6 again as well. working up from 4.5 thru 5.0

Sadly, I don't have any more berrys 147 to compare it to anymore to compare bullets to

thoughts? load something stupid long like 1.8 and see how things go? or stick so something more reasonable like my previous 1.14

I've loaded a lot of 9mm Bayou Bullets, 124LRN, no 147s though. One of my guns has a real short throat, most bullets I load cannot be any longer than 1.100". The Bayous can be 1.130". Don't know if/how this helps. Since you know you can load @ 1.140", no reason not to start there. I would also consult your reload manuals for 147gr lead bullets, make an 'educated' decision.

I like this idea better than loading at 1.80". Wouldn't think there'd be much bullet (shank I guess they call it) in the case at 1.8" :). Maybe you meant 1.20..or maybe Im confused. Going back to bed now.

Yeah, something sounds amiss.
If 1.2 is the longest that will function in the mags, why consider anything longer??

ended up just loading to 1.169 and running through the charge weights.
4.5gr actually functioned (which wouldn't with berry's)

but the best overall performance at this point is a wash between 4.8 and 5. I might go to 4.8 and experiement with OAL to see how it affects accuracy

Stuck waiting for my new scale though before I do any more load development. my old one was damaged, and I borrowed a buddys for loading these.

"...the longest OAL I can use in my magazines..." That'd be it then. OAL isn't about who made a bullet. It's about the bullet weight.
The load should be very close to the same. You load for the bullet weight, not the brand.

Make sure that when you shorten the oal by .010" with an already established load, that you rework the charge at the new oal, or the result could be unexpected excessive pressures. This is especially so with high pressure cartridge such as 9mm.

Read the comment made in the Speer #10 about shortening the oal by .030" with an already worked up load in 9mm. The pressures more than doubled.

This is also why set back is such a serious concern.
