Hey fellas,

9mm Beretta. Put the magazine in and cycle the receiver back to load a round in. As soon as I let go to let the receiver slam forward and set the round, it jams. It doesn't completely seat the round...I do make sure that the gun is clean whenever I shoot. I have tried different types of ammo but it still persists. Any thoughts or ideas?

replace the mag

RED,

You did not specify the model of BERETTA, it makes a difference. The most common problem with BERETTA 92 are magazine based. Check your magazine to see if it is BERETTA or MEC GAR, if not, that may be the problem. Try a different magazine. Even the BERETTA mags wear out.

Also, check the mag to make sure it is a 9m.m. mag and not a .40 S&W mag. That could cause a problem.

Because of the open slide design on the 92, it is very difficult to have a misfeed, at least in my experience. Every feeding problem with the 92/96 models was caused by the mags.

On the 8000, I have not had any feeding problems aside from one worn out mag.

I'd suspect a bad mag too.

The Beretta 92/96 have a very straight feed into the chamber due to it's non-tilting barrel.

Are you saying, the round isn't making it into the barrel or that the round isn't fully seating in the chamber (slide not closing all the way to lockup)?

Sorry guys. It's a Beretta 92FS.

The round isn't making it all the way into the barrel. Like it gets jammed up then I have to pull back the slide a little bit to let the round go in straight. It gets caught on the firing pin. From whats happening and what you guys say, its probably a bad magazine.

It gets caught on the firing pin
The firing pin shouldn't protrude out the front of the breach face until you've pulled the trigger. If it is getting caught of a pin on the face, you're having a bigger problem

Try this evolution:

- purchase a new factory Beretta magazine
- load the magazine with FMJ RN
- lock the slide to the rear, insert the magazine, and load by depressing the slide stop

If this doesn't fix the problem, then it's time to take it to a gunsmith.

mine had feed problems when i first got it. didn't realize it'd been stored dry, no lube. all my firearms, due to the climate they're stored in, have a light coat of oil. being that this one was new (to me) it had no oil. after a few drops of remoil, it worked perfectly.

I will definitely go and purchase a new mag. In regards to the firing pin, when I lock the slide back and tilt the gun upwards or downwards, I can actually see the firing pin move in and out...this doesn't seem normal. What should be done at this point?

The firing pin is retained in the rearward position by a spring...I'd take it to a gunsmith to have it looked at. If it is new, I'd call Beretta.

The only pin that acts like that normally, in the Beretta, is the pin that activates the locking block

The firing pin spring should prevent the firing pin from protruding from the breech face unless struck by the hammer with the safety off - looks like it's gunsmith time for your 92. If it's new, call Beretta customer service.

DOWNLOAD THE MAG.

Does this happen when you load 1 round in the mag and try to chamber?
Are you releasing the slide stop or are you "sling shotting" it?

Believe it or not but one not so common problem beretta (and Ive seen some sigs too) has... is when the gun and mag are BRAND NEW, the mag doesnt fully insert when full of rounds. There is too much tension and not enough give in the mag spring. It looks and feels like it is fully inserted but it isnt. When you hit the slide release you get a fail to chamber.

To eliminate this as a possibility load 1 or 2 rounds in and try it.

^^ It occurs both when I sling shot it and when I release the slide stop. The gun and mag aren't brand new. I have had it for quite some time now. I did also realize that the more rounds I have in there, it seems to have more tension as jbm0207 mentioned. But the 92FS has been used for years now and has a very reliable reputation.

I will start with the mag. If that doesn't work, off to the gunsmith I go. Thanks for the input fellas.

I would start with the gunsmith. Even if a new mag corrects the chambering issue you still have a problem with the firing pin.

But you could use more than 1 mag.
Btw mec gar 18 rd AFC mags are.as good as factory and give you 18 rds.

No4Mk1*: Roger that. I will look into that 18 round mag after I visit the gunsmith. Thanks all.

Cheaperthandirt.com has 18 rd mags on sale for 20 bones. Flush fit too.

I also recommend a gunsmith, OR sending it to Beretta. I'm assuming it is used, as any new gun would be a "send it back", and probably no charge from Beretta. On a used gun, you may even have a broken or missing firing pin spring. Something sounds very wrong.
