I have a new problem in 9mm Luger reloading. In decapping a case and when I lowered the shell plate, the case slipped off the shell plate (the rim broke) and the case remained in the die. I tried to pull it by pliers, however, I have no luck. What are good ways to remove the case without damaging the die? I'm using Dillon reloading equipments. Thanks for your tips in advace.

If you are using Dillon dies, It is a simple matter to unscrew and remove your entire dicapper assembly. Then just take a screwdriver that fits into your die and stuck case and give it a whack. Case out! :)

Drill a hole thru the case with a 1/4 inch drill bit then tap it with a 1/4 inch tap and then useing a peice of pipe just a little shorter then the bolt you have put a big washer or washers on the bolt and thread thru the pie into the case and turn. Pulls the case out very easy. They make something like this commercially but this works just as well and you don't have to drive to town to buy it. I stuck a 375 HH in a die once and had to come up with the solution in the middle os the night once.

Don't use a 1/4" tap drill in the case unless you want to tap it 5/16. 1/4-20 taps use #7
(.201) tap drills.

If it's a Lee die, loosen the decap nut and remove it. Hit the pin with a suitable beating implement. This may mushroom the pin head but that's what files are made for.

The screwdriver method worked. It took a dozen of whacks. I'm on the way to get a bolt which has the same threds as the decap assembly has and try the suggested method at the next time. Thanks.

RCBS Extractor Kit

You can also get a kit that RCBS makes for this very problem - it has the screw, tap, wrench, and everything else you need for this job. They're pretty cheap, and if you ever get a 30-06 case stuck in there, you may really need one.:what: The thing will pay for itself in cussing :cuss: and head banging :banghead: with only one use....

Well while everyone has covered removing the case let's talk prevention. Are the dies carbide? If not I would reccomend squirting some one shot in your dies every now and then.

I learned a prevention lesson: Don't use a .44 shellholder with a 9mm case. Case will get stuck in die every time. I did it only once, however.

Yeah, I don't think I could have jammed more than 1 9mm case into the die.

I DID however, have a 9mm case inside a .44 case during the tumbling process and proceded to charge the case. Sure looked like a lot of powder in it. I eyeball all the cases after charging. I dumped the powder and removed the 9mm case.

I'm learning. I'm slow, but I am learning.

Let me say that I have not tried this:
Why go to the trouble of tapping a hole when you could use one of those Metal roof type screws that have the right size bit made in the tip. Most of these have built in washers as well. All else needed is a socket that fits over the brass. Just a thought!
