my buddy is lookin for a smaller 9mm for around 300 dollars.. what do u think? he was lookin for a used CZ 75 9mm but he has no idea hes just going by looks. gimmie some opinions here.

300 9mm

Taurus PT111 or maybe 24/7 you might be able to find in the high 300s
some of the FN FNP-9 in the same price range also its not compact but hi-power clones

$300- even in ruger/taurus you are looking in used territory (unless you want a new DAO p89 which can be had around $289, but is definitely NOT a compact).

Only compact 9mm's I know of in that price range will be the pf9.

Research First,

There is no way in God’s Green Earth that a person should purchase a handgun on looks alone. What is if he is just looking for a showpiece only, looks might be OK I guest. Coming from the point of view of making a purchase for the use of self-protection, I would do some serious research for a month or so for before making my first handgun purchase.

In my case I most of spent six months or more of research into choosing the right handgun (for myself) for self protection before buying a Glock 26 and than years later a Glock 23. There is a “Hell” of a lot to know before choosing a handgun, using it, the laws, training, reliability and much more. I am still learning after 14 years of ownership and training and I know very little compared to a lot of people on this web site.

Bersa

They make a compact 9 and a .380 that have a great reputation for accuracy, reliability and value. My favorite 9mm is my Astra A75. One of the other posters above stated that your friend needs to do a lot of research and I agree with that.

Wow that really pissed you off huh? Asking around a forum is not the worst thing to do. Get some starting points, ymmv.

Taurus Mil-Pro's go for $299 by me, I just bought a 24/7 DAO model in .40 for $319. Rather good guns for Taurus, I'd choose them over the Ruger P series any day.

I would wait an extra week, month or whatever and get a used GLOCK 19 for about $370-400. Just me.

Yep. +1

Perhaps a Makarov in 9X18Mak or similar Eastern European military pistols might fill the bill if you don't mind the slightly smaller cartridge.

A friend of mine bought a S&W Sigma at Sportsman's Warehouse for $279 (pre tax) earlier this year. The trigger pull is spongy, creepy, and heavy, and that's a shame because the Sigmas have great ergonomics. My experience has been that Sigmas are reliable and affordable pistols. Not my first choice, but with a $300 budget limit for a 9mm it's one of the few choices.

You might also search the forum for comments on the Star BM. It's a 1911 looking compact 9mm pistol, and they usually sell for under $200. They come up frequently in the low cost handgun discussions here on THR. I've no experience with them, so best to see what others who do say about them.

Are you set on a 9mm?

If so, KelTec 9's are about 250 bucks. That would be your best bet at your price point with that caliber.

If you don't mind .38's, then you can get a SW 642, which you can find if you look for 300bucks used.

Both are compact. Both are in your price range.

I have a 3rd gen S&W. It's a 6904 I think. It's 'compact' or so they say, but the frame is nowhere near as concealable as the KelTec. Fantastic firearm, but not compact IMHO.

A couple days ago I bought an FNP-9M for $389 new, and it comes with three 15-round mags.

Took it shooting today, seems like a great gun.

I have a few recommendations.

One is the 9mm Bersa Thunder 9 compact. I havent shot this one but I handled as buddies gun and it was pretty impressive. Fit and finish were top notch and if its anything like my Bersa Thunder 380 it will be reliable as well. Seemed like a good gun.

Next recommendation is the Smith and Wesson 6906. I got a damn fine deal on an almost flawless example 3 or 4 months ago, maybe you can do the same. This particular weapon in the picture came with the box, manuals, 2 factory magazines, GALCO FED paddle holster.....gun is equipped with factory night sights that still glow fairly brightly. Paid $290 in a FTF deal. There are just a few handling marks on the gun.

I do know of a reputable place selling 6906s over the net if you have an FFL lined up. Summit Gun Broker lists 6906s starting at $249 ranging up to $310 based on condition. Link is below.

FWIW:

I don't have a CZ (yet), but CZ's are very popular and seem to be excellent pistols. Any questions, www.CZforum.com. (or something like that.) I hope to get a CZ75 subcompact, or PCR (?) one day.

KelTec P11's (I have one). $250.00 new.. I think I'd go with a good used CZ compact myself..

Bersa Thunder 9/UC (I have one) $305+tax. Excellent pistol, 13+1 capacity (if your state allows), Lifetime warranty. Designed around the Walther P88, which argueably is one of the best 9mm ever made, it is exceedingly accurate, ambi-friendly. Lotsa' gun for little money.. IMO.

Good Glock or Sig trade in's? If you can find one at the right price, sometimes you get a lot of gun at a good price. Not so great a deal if they are shot out...

Lots of choices eh?

Good hunting.

Best Wishes,

MAKAROV!

MAKAROV!!!
Under $200, and they go bang every time. With the remaining cash, get six magazines and 500 rounds.

Arcus 94c

Not well known but a good buy for the price. The Arcus 94c is a Hi Power type pistol in a compact size. $259 + shipping + transfer fee. Ran less than $ 300. Check out centuryarms.com. It has to go through an FFL when you order it.
