I just saw the Stoeger Cougar at Gander mountain for $349. Looked to be the same high quality it had when it was made by Beretta.

Compact around $300?

I think for the money the Taurus Mil Pro's are a good value, a lot more gun than the Kel Tec P-11, (my opinion) but both are good guns in the price range. Remember that everyone has their own opinions and you should always find a gun that fits you or your hand and to evaluate what you (or your friend) want it for, THR.org is a good place but take what is said with a grain of salt and find what works for you and your budget/lifestyle. There is a lot of good info here and a lot of knowledgeable people willing to help. Do your homework and you (or your friend) won't be disappointed.
Good luck and be safe!

There is no way in God’s Green Earth that a person should purchase a handgun on looks alone.
Cuz getting shot with an ugly gun would suck for somebody... OTOH, I too like a nice looking firearm, however I often carry a p-32 or my PM-9,,, neither of which is very pretty. Once and a while, I break out the PPK/S in stainless when I "Class Up"...

My vote in this price range is Keltec P11

The Kel-Tec P11 is LIGHT weight very compact weights only 14oz. with a width of only 1"

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Calibers : 9mm
Weight unloaded lbs:14 oz.
Loaded magazine: 6 oz.
Length: 5.6"
Height: 4.3"
Width: 1"
Barrel Length: 3.1" 79mm
Sight radius: 4.6" 116mm
Muzzle Energy Max: 400 ft lbs 540J
Capacity: 10 + 1 rounds
Trigger Pull: 9 lbs 40N

The firing mechanism is double action only (I truly believe Conceal Carry Folks should ONLY carry DDO guns!!). Mag holds 10 rounds and it's the smallest and lightest 9 mm made.

It has excellent ergonometry, recoil is not bad for a gun of this size. This is one gun that you can carry in all types of clothes, and that's critically important. For the price the quality both material and workmanship is excellent and should you have a problem they have SUPERIOR customer service... No questions asked just return the gun and they will fix it. Not bad for a sub $300.00 9 mm.

You won't regret purchasing this unit.
