And found only incomplete threads.

So I have this Rock Island Armory that I picked up for a song (duh!) and I would like to convert it to 9mm.

Vade retro .45 acp snobs!!!! I have to commander size .45 already!!!

I was thinking about ... sell it to Schoefield3 or turn it into a 9mm wonder.

What does it take?

Who has done it and how has it worked?

slide, barrel, mags, recoil spring and i think the ejector is different, as well as the fitting it all together.

for ~$650 you can get a STI Spartan in 9mm.

.45 to 9mm is not really a cheap undertaking. You have to replace pretty much everything, which won't be drop-in parts either. If they are, go buy a lottery ticket.

If it was easy enough to do you'd see a lot more of 'em.

The breech face is too big on a .45 for 9mm conversion. You'd be better off just buying one designed for 9mm, it would be a lot less expensive than having a conversion done, and you'd still have the original gun intact.. 9x19/38Super/9x23 are easier conversions since the bases are the compatible.

By the time you did it you'd have spent more money in new parts and labor than you would on another gun.

And some of your .45 parts won't fit anymore, specifically your barrel.

The conversion requires a new angle on the feed ramp. Unless you have a ramped barrel already, which I doubt you have on a cheap 1911, you've got to cut it in.

Kimber makes a couple different models along with SW and Springfield.

I had an older model Springfield GI model that was 9mm and it was A LOT of fun and very reliable.

There was an Auto-Ordance 9mm 1911 in the trading post a week ago or so.

Getting ready to do the 9/38 conversion on a RIA MS , taking the 45 upper and putting it on an Foster officer frame for the Better Half and will be Bobtailing the RIA frame and setting it up with a 38 super barrel and also a 9mm barrel

>>Still ... my holy grial is having a 1911 in .40

Try putting a .40 barrel in a 10mm. It may also work in a .38 Super slide if the breech face is a little oversized. A 10mm/.40 extractor is the same as a .38 Super extractor. Most .45 mags will adequately feed 10mm, so they may work reasonably well with the .40 until you buy .40 specific magazines (Meg Gar makes them). I have used a .38 Super barrel in my 10mm Delta, and it worked fine. The 10mm is a great platform for crossover conversions. I have even managed to shoot .40 in a 10mm, but it is not recommended, as the cartridge is only held in place by the extractor, and may malfuction, or fail to fire. In an emergency, though, you might get it to work.
