going to be trying hs 6 and some gold dots and xtp with either 115 or 124
grain question is what is the recommended velocity range to work in for
hollow point expansion ? 1000 to 1100 fps ?

Call Hornady and ask them about the XTP. They would know better than anyone.

Hornady #4 manual says the "useful velocity range" is:
115 XTP = 900 - 1,400.
124 XTP = 900 - 1,200.

Speer Gold Dots would probably be similar as it generally takes around 900 to reliably initiate expansion.

It goes without saying however, that 1,200 is going to expand a lot more reliably and larger then 900.

Gold Dots come in two flavors. The short barrel ones are designed for a lower velocity range.

So for best performance of 9mm hollow points, faster is GENERALLY better? I have some Hornady 147 XTPs, 4.8gr Power Pistol, 1.100" OAL, avg 969fps. This was my first 'effort' with these, seemed to be a pretty good 'guess'. The chronograph died of lead poisoning so I haven't tried any more loads. I also loaded a bunch of Precision Delta 124gr JHP mainly for target. They DO expand, (fired a couple into the pool), 5.8 gr of PP got them moving at 1070 fps avg. I loaded some at 6.0gr, haven't tried them yet, might keep some stashed for SHTF ammo. Any thoughts?

I've loaded 115gr Rem JHP's on top of 7.0grs in of HS-6 in S&B case lit by WSP primer and got 1,237 fps average from my Glock 19, pretty much what Hodgdon says you will get.

For JHP's I look for 1,150 + fps for 124/125gr JHP's and around 1,250 fps for 115gr JHP"s. When I load JHP's it is for potential SD loads so a decent velocity is desired. Normally I prefer Unique of Power Pistol and Use 6.0grs of Unique behind 115 gr JHP's for a bit over 1,250 fps.
