Detroit. um... Dogg.
so, I was cleaning out the basement, and in an old dresser one of my old roomates had left some ammunition. mostly spent cases, but i found 11 rounds of ammo in 9mm with blue coloured hollowpoint bullets. the cavity is quite small, and the ogive is about that of ball ammo. I'm pretty certain they're not Glasers. Glasers are plastic, aren't they? the cases have a headstamp of: FC 9mm Luger.

anyone have any idea what the heck these things are??

I can't answer your question on the blue bullets, but the HS indicates Federal Cartridge Corp., and the caliber is standard SAAMI marking, so the stuff is U.S. made. If all else fails, try a call to Federal.

It sounds to me like you've got some Federal Nyclads, a now-discontinued line of swaged lead hollowpoints covered with a dark blue nylon/plastic coating. If I remember tomorrow, I'll post a picture of a couple of examples. HTH.

Do they look like this? If so these are Nyclads. I have 2 boxes of them that were given to me years ago.

Nyclads were first made by [or for] S&W .They had a truncated cone shape with a deep hollow point. The expansion was dramatic , not exiting a rabbit and opening to 3/4". Then it was made by Federal. Soft lead with a blue nylon coating as you have pictured.

that sure looks like 'em.
'course, I don't know what I should do with 'em. I don't know how long they've been sitting in the basement, so I don't think I should carry them. I guess I'll just add them to my cartridge collection.

No they are not still being made.

Didn't you know that companies don't like to sell sucessful products??:banghead:

Federal recently dropping the Nyclad bullet. I have shot them in 9mm and 38 Special +P. I found they were not as accurate at 25 yards as traditional jacketed or all lead bullets, but I am sure they would expand nicely and for a defensive round, 25 yard accuracy is not all that important. I am sure the few you found are just fine if you want to shoot them.

Yes, they are still made bc my agency still issues them as duty ammo in .38... They SUCK but trying to change a gov spec is like trying to invent the bullet all over again. Our only hope is that Federal will totally discontinue production at some point forcing us to get something better. We also still issue those crappy Hydra Shok 9mms too, even though we have had several shootings where the round did not perform well at all...

They ARE still made.

They ARE NOT still offered to us lowly peasants.

Hope that clears up the issue.

I understand that the nyclads don't bring a "signature" with them when fired from certain poly oganal barrels so they are no longer offered to mere civilians.

One of the very respected 9mm gurus on this board thinks they are excellent carry ammo because of their expansion capabilities.

I think the plastic coating was added to reduce leading, but allowed easier expansion than copper jackets.

I used to shoot them many years ago out of a Beretta 92 and they shot very well. The plastic coating did exactly what damon said about better expansion over copper jacketed rounds, and they fed much better due to the plastic covering. The lead underneath the jacket is VERY soft, and will deform easily with a fingernail even through the plastic coating.

I have Nyclads loaded in my .38 special Det. Special. If I could find some in 9mm, I'd load them in my Steyr M9 and SIG P225 without reservation.

Hello. As has already been stated, the rounds are Federal 124-gr. Nyclad HP's.

Already mentioned, the load is still made, but not offered to the public.

Chronographed Average Velocities:

Browning Hi Power: 1140 ft/sec

Glock 26: 1063 ft/sec

Springfield XD9: 1120 ft/sec

CZ-75: 1162 ft/sec

The round has proven accurate in several guns, exceptionally so in some.

Best.

I use the .38 load in my J frame when carrying the little guy.

The lead is dead soft and there is less smoke than non-coated lead ammo.

well, since I can't get any more to test, and they do me no good sitting around, I think I'll use the 11 rounds I have in a bowling pin shoot on Wednesday. *shrug* thanks for the identification, though, guys! :)
