What is the best option for 9mm JHP ammo when it comes to expansion/permenant wound channel/stopping power - 124gr +p+ or 147gr subsonic?

Of course, you'd be better off with 147 grain +P supersonics!

DoubleTap has 147 grain 9mm +P that goes at the same speed as the regular Speer Gold Dot 124 grain +P. The DoubleTap is also loaded with the Gold Dot bullet, just a heavier bullet at the same speed.

I just learned that the pistol I am buying states in the manual to NOT fire +P+ ammo through it... so I guess +P+ is out for me - but I am open to suggestions!

Ranger 147 grain law enforcement - is that subsonic or supersonic? My local dealer has them for $20 a box of 50.

What JHP rounds are only 115 grain? Never seen any myself.
Every major manufactuer makes a 115gr jhp load, usually some in +P or +P+. They don't seem to be as popular now as they once where, but they're certainly not a rarity.

One mag of hornady 124 TAP and one of Winchester 147 gr subsonic truncated cone hardballs.

one shot one kill

I carry Speer 124-grain Gold Dots, in their standard pressure variety. I've had no problems with them.

Which is better for your question is up to a ballistics expert to answer -- and I'm no ballistics expert.

Why do you want a 147 subsonic? Why not a supersonic 147 like the SXT rangers?

Mach 1 is ~ 1125 fps. Few, if any 147 gr loadings break 1000 fps.

I carry .40 S&W 180 gr or .45 ACP 230 gr. But if I carried a 9mm it's be 147 gr because they all have about the same sectional density and the smaller pills have a bit more velocity than the .45ACP to hopefully keep up the penetration if I do get some expansion.

My experience is not all 9mm guns are reliable with 147 gr ammo so test thoroughlym my second choice would be the next heaviest I could fine, 135 gr or 124 gr.

The three most important things bout bullets in defensive shooting are: Placement, Placement, and Penetration.

My everyday carry is the KT P-11. Short barrel and a preference for heavy bullets. Shoots to POA with the 147 Golden Sabres.

Just for fun, I shot some 115gr Silvertips and the 147 GS upstairs in my extra bedroom into some catalogue backstop. With ears on, the 115's were NASTY!! Muzzle flash BIG! The 147's were loud but really, in comparison, mild.

In the back of my mind, I KNOW I shoot the 147s' better and, God forbid, I ever need to unleash some out on the street, the experience is going to be gentler with them than the lighter weight high-speed blasters. JMO.

I'm going to give Mike McNett's 124grain +P DoubleTap load a try in my Browning Hi-Power. It's advertised at 1310fps / 473ft lbs out of a 4.5" barrell.

:what:

If it's anything like his 165grain 40S&W load I have every reason to believe it will live up to those numbers.

That is always a good thing to check on before you buy a pistol, but now you know for next time. Just currious what pistol did you buy that is in reference to the above?

I use hornaday xtp's all mine

glock 19 147gr
xd .40 service model 180gr
kahr k40. 155gr

When I had a 9mm ( i need to ge another one ) I would carry 147 grn rounds as they tend to penetrate more than the lighter ones. I havent seen any tests done with the +P+ 127 Rangers, but I think they might be really good penetrators.

Carry Winchester standard 115 grain JHPs And Black Hills red box 115GR.JHPs at 1300 ft. per second. !47JHPs were horrible early on with overpenetration ,expansion, and reliability.Newer redesigned 147s got rid of all the gliches. So I keep a few around for just in case they may be needed.Haven"t felt the need yet.

I load my P11 with 115 grain Hornady XTPs over a hefty charge of Unique. It shoots to point of aim and shoots a tiny group (for a pocket pistol, 3.5" at 25 yards). Accuracy and reliability is the MOST important thing in ammo choice. "Power" takes a back seat every time to accuracy and reliability. But, I'm getting 410 ft lbs out of that P11, ain't bad on power either and I know at 1260 fps, it's going to expand.

Winchester Ranger 127 grain +P+ SXT

I like alot of self defense loads for the 9mm, but my two favorites are the Winchester Ranger 127 grain +p+ JHP SXT pushing about 1280 FPS out of my Glock 17. My other is the CON BON 115 +P JHP up in the 1300's FPS range.

115 grain +P. 1330 fps from a 4.5" Ruger barrel. About 440 ft lbs. 1260 fps/410 ft lbs from a 3" Kel Tec P11.

McGunner: I have never seen a test report on a Kel-tec P11 that achieves more than 320 ft lbs (from Cor-bon). Is this 410 ft lb number something that you did with hand loads?
