9mm Major - Eley and Everglades loads comparison

The 9mm Winchester Magnum (9x29mm) was developed in the late 70s to duplicate the .357 Magnum performance in a rimless cartridge for use in semiautomatic pistols.

The first handgun for it was the Wildey. After that, the Automag III and Thomson Contenders.

There was also the 9x25mm Mauser. This one was used in the early 20th century in a Mauser pistol and later in some submachine guns.

The 9mm has quite a diverse history in cartridges, from the 9mm Kurtz (short...or .380 a we know it by mostly) all the way to the 9x29mm Winchester Magnum.

The 9mm Major is just another varient, and that really being no more than a different loading of the 9x19mm Parabelum (Luger) that most of us are familiar with today.

The 9mm Major is a niche round, and not really suitable for the current 9mm market simply because it's a wildcat loading of the 9x19mm round. Nobody in the firearms and ammunition industry will be likely to attempt marketing the 9mm Major because of this, since it can be chambered and fired in any of today's 9mm pistols. The liability is far too great.

But THERE ARE NOW ammunition manufacturers SELLING 9mm Major ammunition like Eley, Atlanta Arms and Everglades Ammo - https://gunsvalley.com/9mm-major/

To me, Eley deciding to sell not just 9mm Minor/PCC/38 Super Comp ammunition but 9mm Major ammunition could be significant reflection of where market trend may be headed. It may be 9mm Major will only remain with match shooters but with popularity of John Wick movie using 9mm Major, there may start a new market trend and interest for 9mm Major not just for major PF competition.

There already is a "9mm Magnum" ... It's called .357 Sig.

... runs in a G22 with a simple conversion barrel, the same RSA and magazines ... It'll do what you want, and do it without any issue. Just sayin'.
That is true, pushing 37,000 - 38,000 PSI to achieve over 1300-1400 fps with 124/125 gr bullets.

But since I have plenty of 9mm brass and several 40-9mm conversion barrels for my G22, I figured I could have some "fun" working up towards 9mm Major velocities.

Check out the Brian Enos forum 9mm/38 page. There is load data from actual 9 Major shooters. https://forums.brianenos.com/forum/72-9mm38-caliber/

And: https://www.ssusa.org/articles/2018/1/9/how-to-use-9-major-in-a-short-barrel/
Yes, I have read both with interest and they encouraged me to consider doing work up towards 9mm Major instead of "reinventing the wheel" blindly.

And since I have plenty of RMR bullets which Eley used for their 9mm Major (And 9mm Minor/PCC) match ammunition, I thought about starting with HS-6 (which I used for USPSA) and AutoComp due to lesser max case fill for greater bullet seating depth.

GONRA sez - LiveLife's Retirement Project sure looks likes phun! Just don't blow yer head off....
I certainly don't intend to blow up anything hence why I am thinking about using 40-9mm conversion barrels with thicker chamber/barrel walls and referencing well established match load data while meticulously inspecting and tracking brass usage.

And you are correct about retirement project priorities ... Until primer availability and pricing improves, I will be severely curtailing reloading of any caliber while I focus more on 22LR shooting and testing for several 22LR, 10/22 and T/CR22 accurizing and myth busting threads.

I’ve never seen a John Wick movie. Don’t care to, either.

But consider the discussion of thread revolves around future "trend" and whether we like John Wick movies or not, that is irrelevant.

What is relevant is how popular John Wick movies are with the younger, future generations of gun owners who will DRIVE the market trend that gun/ammunition manufacturers will have to cater to.

During my lifetime, I have seen the gun culture progress from .38/.357/.44 Mag to 45ACP to Wonder 9mm to 40S&W/10mm while I saw the explosion of SKS/AK popularity with AR/PCC dominance popularized by 3-gun matches.

People wanted to buy .357 Mag/Beretta 92 when they saw them in the movies and when X-Files showcased Sig P226, even I bought one :D. Of course, who wouldn't want to be Magnum PI with 1911? (Yeah, I bought several too :p). And when all the movies and TV shows showed Glocks predominately, guess what? All the younger generations, including gang bangers wanted Glocks (I know, I know, our family switched to Glocks ...).

And now 9mm Major is front and center in John Wick movies ... And people are starting to ask about "9mm Major" ... ;)

ETA: I revised the OP title and dropped "9mm Magnum" to emphasize "9mm Major"

I think you should gather some investors and contract with a manufacturer to roll mark a purpose-built “Major 9” pistol. Nothing speaks louder than cash.

I’d love to shoot like John Wick…enjoyed the films, but I’ll admit I couldn’t tell from watching them it was 9mm major. Now, Dirty Harry spelled it out.
A guy on our squad at Area 8 shooting 9mm PCC left the chrono at 170. We were all surprised and asked what he loaded and he told us he gets his ammo supplied free, I’m pretty sure it was Atlanta Arms. We got the impression he was LE, so yes, that hot stuff is out there. I don’t have a desire to go down the 9 major path, but if I did I’d do it on a PCC platform.

I wonder what would happen if you shot a full magazine of those in a pre-1918 Luger? Those are pretty strong guns but that’s about a proofing load for them.

what was my last load for 9mm Major frame breaker… 124g 8.6gn of Auto Comp, I believe. Had it on a G17L with Comp and heavy Godzilla springs
