Looking at picking up a high cap 9mm late this year. This gun will be specially for car, bicycle and motor cycling use. Used to carry a G21 so a big heavy gun is no big deal for me to carry. However is dose need to have lighter recoil than my standard .40 and .45 fair. I am familiar with Glocks and shoot them well. I was looking at the G17, G17c or G34. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

My only suggestion would be practice shooting both strong hand and weak often.
Half the time of my sessions of shooting are done one handed.

I've shot a couple G34s'. I doubt you can go wrong with either, if you like Glocks. The long slides should dampen the recoil for one handed work.

Glocks aren't heavy. Try carrying a S&W 4006 all day long. :what:

Ah so the long slide dose dampen recoil that's good to know. I've gone back to hand loading recently. So I will be picking up dies and a lone wolf barrel if I do buy a 34.

I've shot lots of Glocks. If I could carry around everday my favorite it would be the 34. Long sight radius. High cap.

While the 34 has a longer slide, they've taken steps to lighten it a bit, to keep the BALANCE (feel in hand) similar to the Glock 17. I've had both (and a 35), and I doubt you'll notice much difference.

That said, I do like the 34 a bit better -- but only becuase of the sights, extended controls, and slightly lghter trigger -- but all of those can easily and inexpensively be added to the 17.

The G17 will be easier to conceal. A shorter sight radius means a tad quicker target acquisition. You said it is for SD not bullseye. At this range there will be no practical advantage to a long slide. Target sights will probably be redundant as well, but you might consider low profile tritium sights, depending on your needs.

G19 will be even easier to handle in that situation. If you insist on a couple of extra rounds, a factory +2 mag extention or even a G17 mag will meet your criteria.

I own several Glocks and if that's what you want, get a model 19. That and my 23 are the easiest most comfortable for me to shoot. Comfortable shooting for me is more of a balance thing than just numbers: slide length, barrel length and etc. The 19/23 size Glocks just fit me very well.

When I was riding, I carried a Gen3 model 19 my daughter now has and it was, for me, the perfect "saddle gun" for a variety of reasons.

But I tell you, my wife's SR9 and SR9c have really gotten my attention. I still have a Glock 19 (Gen4), but either of her three SR guns would be quite appropriate. Including her her SR40 ... lots of good choices really.

The slide on a 34 has a cut-out on top to reduce weight. I doubt it weighs any more than a 17 slide. Gen4 17 has the dual RSA which is supposed to help reduce felt recoil, though I've never felt the difference between my Gen 3 or 4 17.

This thread's some good readin'! I really appreciate seeing everyone's opinions.

I am on the fence between a 17 and 34 for range use only. I generally like full-sized pistols over compacts, with my reference being a certain well-known 5" steel pistol.

Unfortunately I can't seem to find a 34 to see if I like its balance, let alone actually shoot it. It sounds like the balance is pretty similar from everyone's comments.

So does it really boil down to getting that extra ~.8" of sight radius?

I really like my little G27 but I can shoot my bigger G21 so much better. Almost bought a G19 very small and handy but like my G27 it's not really enough gun. What I'm worried about is folks with long guns. (yeah laugh but there are no police in this part of Rural western Oregon) Our local DA is so underfunded they can't even afford to prosecute people. However we do have homeless warming centers. Oh and did I mention that $116k Eugene spent to appease the occupy nuts when they could have just kicked them out for illegal camping.
Gotta love living in a Liberal area! Eugene OR, Hippy capital of the US! Don't expect to leave here with all your belongings after a visit! But do expect to almost hit 20 stoned bicycle riders every time you drive threw town! As you enter the County just south of here you see a sign that says, "Welcome to Douglas County, We honor veterans." Coming back up north into Lane county the sign says, "Welcome to Lane County, We spit on veterans and call them baby killers." Sorry sorry sorry for the rant. Thous who live here know what I mean. Moving out of here as soon as I can.
Looked into an SBR PS90 and several types of other SBR's and lightweight AR15's.Too much money and weight. I like the longer sight radius. That's why I'm looking at the G34. Just a bit easier to shoot at longer ranges. I guess it's a a mute point until I can get to a gun store and handle a G34 and a G17. If I can ever find a store with any guns in stock that is!

Where do you practice shooting from the motorcycle? I can't picture how to do it, myself ... clutch and coast while shooting right-handed? Shoot lefty and hope you don't need to shift?

The "Glock Mafia" has, of course, drank the "Kool-Aid" and has weighed in with their opinions.

In fairness to Glock, their marketing division has earned every dollar they have been commissioned.

Now: Try either a Walther P99AS or a Walther PPQ (Gen 1 or "M1").

Or a CZ (take your pick).

Seriously: the best gun is the one that both feels right and shoots right in your hands, be it a Glock, Sig, Colt, CZ, XD, etc.

If your decisions are limited to G17 or G34, find a better gun store, and/or expand your horizons.

What part of this statement don't you understand? Go pi$$ on someone else's thread.

^ OOOh! Glock Mafia no likee com-pe-tition! :fire:

Seriously: resist the kool-aid (no matter what the Glock-mafia points at your head!) and try something else.

If the Glock fits, go with it. As said above: Go with what best fits AND shoots in YOUR hands, regardless of brand name, country of origin, etc.

Any fully syncronized MC tranny will easily shift by slightly coming off the throttle and shifting without the clutch.

For me, a heavier pistol is easier to shoot "and hit something" one-handed. It's less influenced by trigger pull and grip with the same hand.
What works for you is what's important.

I shoot a Glock 34 in competition, and have experience with the G17 as well as G19. I still also own a G19, and for CCW it is ideal. Honestly, the G34 is not any harder to conceal than a G17. The grips are the same exact dimensions, and the barrel length difference is negligible (if you are carrying IWB). I actually shoot the G17 the worst of all 9mm Glocks, but I'm not sure why.

While the G34 does have a cutout in the top of the slide, it is still slightly heavier than the G17. Does it decrease felt recoil? When I shoot them side by side there is not a noticeable difference.

Now be nice guys. Pretend we are all armed and talking face to face.
I'm just going to haft to handle them and see what one I like better. They only thing I can figure the 34 has over the 17 is a little more velocity and the longer sight radius. Both are very big pluses to me. I don't like the sights. I'll haft to swap them out, the open slide and the extra cost are factors as well.
Frankly I like 1911's and Swiss/West German Sigs way more than any Glock. But for some reason I can't shoot Sig's worth stink. And 1911's are just to spendy and finicky for me to carry.

I shoot a HG-17 in the usual pistol games and have carried a G-36. However for one handed shooting I prefer a 1911 type with a crisp SA trigger.
