I really want a 9mm revolver. I've been waiting for the Charter Arms Pitbull to come out in 9mm but it seems to be taking forever.

At LGS today I saw a new 9mm S&W 640 for $860.00

Does that sound like a decent price?

It sounds high by about 30% to me...but you may have a hard time finding S&W 9x19 revolvers, so it's all about how badly you want it.

Buy it! It's one of a kind!

All the other J-frame 9mm's are called the 940

Seriously, it's high. Taurus made one that can be found for $350 or so.

Im pretty sure you can find 9mm Ruger SP 101s for alot less than that...seems to me i just saw one a few months ago for about 500

LGS clerk said it was factory new.

I do hate this store's prices.

They had a PSP that I really thought looked nice, but they priced it at $1,400 !!!

So I took a pass on it, but 6 weeks later, someone bought it.

I can't argue with the way they price things if people are buying their guns (I can't argue with their pricing strategy anyway)

I've been tempted to pickup a Taurus 905, and from what I've read - they haven't had problems like cylinder falling out of them or barrels coming off or anything like tha, but most people do say the "Stellar" clips on the Taurus are no good, but now there are after-market clips which are pretty good.

CheckPoint is importing the Alfa-Proj 9mm revolvers, which look nice, but I don't know enough about them. If they are fairly decent I'd rather have an Alfa-Proj than a Taurus.

9mm revolvers get under my skin. When I see one, it causes me a lot of turmoil and I keep wondering how long it's going to take Charter Arms to get their 9mm to market.

A 640 chambered in 9mm will almost certainly be a custom conversion. The 9mm J frames are the Model 940 & 942. The 940 was manufactured between 1991 & 1998. The 940 & 940-1 were on the old j frame, the 940-2 on the J Magnum frame. The 942 was a one off airweight prototype.

Radagast is correct. There was never a 640 chambered in 9mm from the factory. Well there was but, following S&W's usual practice, it had a different model number: the 940.

I've got a couple of 940s rattling around in the safe. They're pretty cool, but I would never drop eight and a half bills on one.

Somebody (duh) had posted a few times about J conversions to 9mm on the standard forums - here, the SW forum and TFL.

A Sc framed 9mm snubbie with a 547 type ejector would be fun - but probably cost a mint.

If it's a a factory S&W 940 in new cndition then the $860 tag is very reasonable.

I've got to disagree with you there. That price sounds like the absolute top end for a 940 and would be more in line with one with rare features (3" barrel or chambered in .356 TSW.) I picked up both of my 940s for less than $860 total (and that was within the last five years.)
