I’ve got smaller hands and finger reach and I’m looking for new 9mm option in semi-auto. Doesn’t need to be a micro-mini one, it’s not for CCW per say, more interested in grip and shooting position comfort at this stage.

I’ve searched here and some other boards for some opinions/options to go take a look at BUT a lot of the conversation threads out there seem a bit dated and I don’t think they reflect some of the newer models. If you think I missed a good thread in my search, please let me know, I don't want to have everyone re-invent the wheel.

But I say THINK because if a gun is not mentioned, I don’t know if it’s being considered and just not stated. Some examples include the newer single stack compact and sub-compact models like Kahr and Taurus (and others) have come out with lately.

I think their size alone makes some of the single stacks subs feel better for small hands, but additionally in my locale there are 10 round mag caps anyway. I get no little to no benefit from the double mags.

If you have any suggestions fire away so I can take a peek on my next rental/shopping trip, I don’t want to miss any possibilities while I’m looking.

If you’re making a suggestion, I’d love to hear your opinion on the barrel size / effective range and recoil. These are some of the obvious tradeoffs (that matter to me) for many of the subs because of their size. Not sure what “balance point” I’ll settle in yet, so I’m all ears.

The larger "T" Kahrs are great for the range because of their full length grip, soft recoil and nice trigger. They come all steel or polymer. The 4" barrel produces good accuracy. Grip girth and trigger reach are typical Kahr, just made for smaller hands.

Here's T9 and a TP9 together. One weighs 28 ounces, the other 20.

I believe Taurus PT111 may have smaller grip than many other double stack pistol.

It is double stack 9mm with DA/SA trigger. Whenever the slide is racked, the trigger is set to shorter SA to help your reach issue.

Try handling several pistols at the store and dry fire them to see if you are comfortable with the trigger reach.

You might look at the Ruger SR9. Its slim grip is a nice compromise between the wife's hand and mine even though it's a 17 round double stack mag. Stainless steel slide, polymer frame, 4.14 inch barrel, striker fired, low recoil, and has adjustable rear sights. Sells for around $450.

Tokarev [TT33], a Zastava [yugo] if you can find one, or one of the Eastern Block countries. Comes in 9mm and single stack is the way to go for small hands. If I had to I'd settle for a Norinco, but the safety on those sucks [I tried but inadequate just doesn't say enough]

Logic would seem to dictate that small hands are suited to small guns, but...

I have small hands and really REALLY like the M&P compact in 9mm and prefer the large backstrap. I've had it for 3 years and enjoy no other handgun as much.

Also...thought I had to have a p3AT, but thankfully rented one first and immediately realized I wanted nothing further to do with anything so uncomfortable, actually painful, to shoot.

Further, I like the way my 642 feels with stock grips. Can have fun shooting +P all day and hit what I'm aiming at.

Of course, YMMV.

You know what, as a fellow 'small hander' I completely understand what you're saying and appreciate the feedback. That's the odd thing about smaller hands, sometimes things that you don't expect to fit do and the small stuff feels funny.

Does anyone know if the new Taurus 709 series has good small hand ergonomics? I think they have the same DA/SA trigger bds was talking about.

Actually, the Taurus line is getting a little confusing for me because it seems like there's some overlap between certain models and I don't quite understand all the differences. But I suppose that's a different post.

Might be worthwhile to take a look at the Walther P99.
Or the P99c (i.e. the compact). The compact and the full size come with interchangeable backstraps. Note there are different triggers - I like the AS.

Any Smith 39xx series. Small, light, flawlessly reliable.

I agree with that. An S&W 39 has an incredibly natural grip - some really knowledgeable gun-folk have called it about the best ever. I don't really have small hands, but I've NEVER met a double-stack 9 I really liked the grip geometry. The 39 is a different story - really nice.

I have a Taurus PT111 Pro and it fits my small hands nicely. My S&W fits alright, but the Taurus is a bit better for me.

Generation 4 GLOCKS have a smaller grip now. Gen 4 GLOCK 17's are out now, with model 19's to follow.

Hey bds, do you know what some of the pro's/con's between the PT111 and the 709 series are in that Taurus line?

FNP-9, they have two backstraps, well, they just went through a minor facelift and I believe now come with three or four backstraps, really tight, low-tech way to secure them so you know they will never give you trouble, smooth triggers, great sights, reliable as can be, and pretty trim for what they are. Functionally the equal or better of any Sig or HK but more slender, less bulky slide and frame, equal or better capacity, perfectly sized grip, the best backstrap system I have seen yet, there is a lot to love about the FNP.

I really like the M&P grip (full size) also. If you have the M&P compact, PT111 won't be much improvement (I think PT111 may have smaller grip).

PT111Pro is a double stack frame with wider grip and more capacity (10+1).
Width: 1.125" (That's the OAL of the 9mm ... :D)
Barrel: 3.25"
Length: 6.125"
Height: 5.125"
Weight: 24 oz.

709 is a single stack "slim frame" with narrower grip and less capacity (7+1).
Width: 1.04"
Barrel: 3.2"
Length: 6.24"
Height: 4.52"
Weight: 19 oz.

Trigger Pull: 5-7 lbs SA, 7-9 lbs DA

New Unique SA/DA Trigger System solves the double action/single action dilemma once and for all. Figure 1 [photo] shows the trigger at full rest. When a round is chambered, the trigger sets in single action mode with the trigger traveling freely to the crisp break point [for even shorter reach]. The trigger resets to DA mode until another round is chambered.
