I am starting to load 9mm swc115gr. .356 penn bullets with a lube ring. I have never loaded cast bullets with a lube ring. When I talked to penn bullets the guy said that most of the people that he had talked to for overall length seated the bullet to about a thumb nail width below the shoulder. When I do that the over all length is 1.076. I loaded five dummy rounds and they will cycle through my m&p 9mm. My starting question is, is the oal so short that it will not leave enough room in the case for the powder.( will it compress it). One other question is can I leave the lube ring out of the case or does it have to be covered inside the case. I am going to load these with titegroup and or win 231. The penn rep suggested clays but I haven't got to the store to get any yet. Thanks Craig

I also am noticing a ridge around the case where the bullet stops. I purchased the .356 only because that is what they said was standard. The shell will chamber and eject is it safe to fire?

Load to your COAL, don't worry about where the lube groove ends up. Case in point, see these 7.62x39mm loads I am using, and see what is exposed.

They work JUST fine. Go to your usual COAL for that weight bullet, and powder charge, and see what happens. Betcha it works with no issues. Now for the case ring, if it causes a chambering problem this is where the Lee FCD die comes in very handy. Works well for me. But normally you will get a small "wasp waist" in a 9mm handload, no sweat. As long as you followed the published recipe from a reputable source, you should not have issues.

My $.02, worth probably less than you paid for it. ;D
