9mm Trouble

I have aquired some new bullets and am having some difficulty. I am trying to load Hornady 3-d lead round nose 125gr in 9mm using aa#2. My manual list the OAL at 1.1". However if I seat the bullet to this OAL the Shoulder on the bullet engages the rifling and the round does not chamber all the way. In-order to get this bullet to chamber properly I have to seat the bullet down to 1.065". I realize I would have to lower my powder charge somewhat because of the decrease in OAL but would I have any other ill effects. Thanks for the help.

As long as you reduce the charge you should be OK. For an extra margin of safety you might try a slower powder. I've had excellent results with plated bullets and AA #7 in 9mm.

Josh, what gun are you loading these for? Also what manual are you using? I load quite a few 9's and am currently doing a case for a friend. (National Bullet Co. 125gr. L-RN) I am using Speer's #13 and it calls out O.A.L for a 125 L-RN at 1.130. This length chambers well in his and my pistols. (Smith's and Ruger's) The shortest O.A.L I have seen is 1.050 for a 90gr.J-RN bullet. SAMMI shows O.A.L. from 1.000-1.690 so you're not out of the ballpark, but that seems awful short for the weight. The ogive on that bullet may be too fat for your action. 9's are usually a fairly tight profile. Could this bullet be specific to a revolver loading? You Might make up a dummy and soot-check it in your barrel. You should be no closer than .004 from the rifling typically. The ill effect of seating too deep is too much pressure, so be careful.

Thanks for the responses, I got the OAL out of a Lee manual. The bullets are being loaded for a pt-111. The box they came in says .356" 9MM. They have a slight shoulder on them before the round nose begins and I have to seat this nose reletivly deep so that it does not come in contact with the rifling upon chambering. I think I will Load a couple with reduced powder charges and test fire them. I am not after a hot load, these are for target practice on shilouetes(?) at close range and they were very cheap at my local shop so I thought I would try them.

I have a Midway loadmap that lists Hornady 124gr lead RN COAL at 1.040in. AA# 2 loads start at 3.0 gr and maximum 4.3 gr.
What charge are you using?
