Hi,

Just as a preface I don't reload and have no equipment but I might be willing to get some if necessary. I want a round to silently kill squirrels in my backyard. If I take apart a 95 grain barnaul jhp round and remove the powder then put the bullet back in will there be enough energy in the primer for the bullet to clear the barrel? Enough to kill a squirrel after leaving? Would I need special equipment to remove the bullet and re-fit it? I tried to remove it with pliers and it wasn't working.

Thanks for the help,

Jeff

stop Jeff dont do that all you will do is get a bullet stuck in the barrel of your mak. Just too many danger points here. need to deal with squirrels
traps is best way for city folk.:D

traps are simple to make

My grandad and I (before he died) made a trap together to catch squirrels, just for the heck of it, and release them. I guess he was teaching me stuff and giving a VERY active child something to do. I drew a quick design for you in Paint. The main consideration is the activator everything is very easy.
squirrel nudges stick that has goodies behind it and trap closes.

by the way, I have no idea where the extra lines came from in the pic. When I posted a few floating lines showed up in the pic. the far right side has the door. The dowel is labeled and has a cord connecting the door to it. dowel goes up, door comes down. All you need is chicken wire and some wood to make a skeleton box and walls of the chiken wire.

I guess by now, you have figured out I'm not a fan of the primer charge Idea ;)

aguila does make the colibri for the .22 however... it is primer charge and fairly quiet. Just watch for it not clearing the barrel. I have used them successfully but have had some stories...

Get an air rifle, or use CB caps in a bolt action, single shot or lever action .22 (whatever, as long as it's not an autoloader).

If you have a .22 gun you can use .22 and .22 LR CB caps that are propelled only by the primer.

The brand I have are CCI but there may be more brands being made now.

They are inherantly quieter in the rifle barrel than with the short pistol barrels but are still far quieter than .22s on top of powder.

I have fired my CB caps in semi-auto loaders but you have to cycle the action by hand to eject the spent round.

As it was mentioned I wouldn't try making a similar bullet out of a Mak round.

IF.........IF someone was so inclined to be gutsy and give it a go you'd need an inertial or collet bullet puller, a set of dies and a press to get anything accomplished.

To me that would be money wasted just to find out the idea sux, LOL.

Then again, it might work. I'm not sure. But I'm recommending against it.

I have never fired a 9x18 round with no powder, but I have fired a number of other cartridges with no powder. In every case, the bullet was stuck in the bore. I have no reason to believe that the 9x18 would be any different.

In order to pull the bullet from a loaded round, you need some kind of bullet puller. I use one that looks similar to a hammer. A collet holds the case by the rim. The "hammer" is then pounded on a hard surface. After a couple blows the bullet comes out of the case.
In order to load the bullet into the case, you need a loading press with a bullet seating die.

Could it be done another way, without the right tools ? I suppose so. You could pull a bullet with pliers. I am pretty certain you would gouge the bullet in the process and probably bend the case. I am also fairly certain you could seat a bullet into the case by pounding it into the case or possibly squeezing it in a vice. Odds are the bullet will not be straight in the case and the bullet will not be crimped. Anything can be achieved with enough time and effort, but in this case, there isn't much point to it since I doubt the bullet would exit the bore. Assuming the bullet did leave the bore, you would have to assemble at least a few such rounds to determine where the bullet is going to hit in relation to the sights in order to hit the squirrel.

There are much easier ways to achieve what you want to do. Probably the best is an air rifle. It would be quiet. Assuming you bought a good quality airgun, it would have enough power. And finally, it would be safer to use in an urban environment. .22 CB caps are also good when fired from a rifle. Out of a handgun they are still pretty loud to be fired in a city without a decent chance of someone calling 911 for shots fired. However, you now have a risk of bullets hitting things you don't want them to because of the increased power.

Thanks for the responses. I had a suspicion that the bullet wouldn't have the energy to exit. Since money is an issue I'll probably just try to make a trap rather than buy an air rifle. I have a .22 pistol and rifle but apparently the pistol would be too loud with cb caps. The rifle would be too visible to my neighbors.
