I got a hold of this rifle awhile back, don't worry I did not pay money for it.
From what I see it's a old Mossberg could even be pre wwii, the original barrel is gone . This is a strange bubba 22 because it's clear the person had a bit of tools/ machines, but just destroyed this gun.

start with the barrel, the fellow fitted a old numrich ruger 10/22 barrel.
from what I see it's just a press for barrel so should have been easy to match the original one. Well the did such a bad job the barrel was welded to the action.

keep in mind this person had use to a lathe and a tig welder. The few spot welds there are have cracked, but to keep the gun looking good he only fully welded the bottom.

then the stock, well it's 3 peases as far as I can tell. The butt and forearm are from a different stock. So the middle with the action is the original, the line were they are joined are very good. But the they thought they would checker the stock, bubba style. They did not have a butt plate so they just engraved one on.

the action bubba have it a weight saving treatment by drilling a bunch of holes so he could mount all his fancy scopes. Better yet there all stripped. Even had a base on the bolt body until he tried to open the bolt. There are no sights on the barrel either.

I have not shot this death trap yet mostly because I have not way to mount any sights or a scope, well I could but not one dollar will go into this gun.

I do plan to strip it down and see if I can fit the barrel proper, the stock is not to bad it could lose some weight, that would do away with the checkering. It needs to be beadded the action rocks in the wood. Figure out some sights or a scope base.

I have a 17 caliber barrel I was thinking of fitting but should save that for something else.

Sorry again for the bad pics, I figured you would get a good laugh.

what a strange little gun! If I don't ruin anything when I change the barrel on my 795 you can have my old one if you want it lol.
I got the barrel off this a few minutes ago, one small cut like 50tho deep and a rap with the rubber mallet it came loose lol. The barrel is 24'' so I have plenty to chop and make a new shank.

There is a hexagon nut that is for the action screw and works as a pin to hold the barrel in place. I should be able to face the action in the lathe to clean it up.

You never know Troy, as cheap as you got it for, cleaned up and repaired it may become your favorite 22. You know, like an ugly dog that's just too loyal to hate... Or too ugly to give away in good conscience...
Maybe if I could find a peep lol. Scopes seem out the drop on the stock puts my eye just above the barrel. I have a few Remington aluminum butt plates that would fit nice if really don't want to sacrifice one for this.

His name would have to be Puna. I've never met an uglier, more vicious, or loyal little monster......

Yeah looks doable, I'm looking forward to how this turns out lol. A 17M2 would be a really neat conversion.

Ya have to wait for when I go up to my dads for the lathe, plus I have to find where I put the 17 barrel lol. I think I will thin the stock down and get rid of the checkering, does not leave much wood around the grip cap tho. I don't care for the squared off forend, I have some cherry to make a tip of needed. The stock looks 50s

sounds like a johnny cash sound for this rifle

I was just about to mention that...
I almost feel like this didn't start as a rifle that got a drunken Bubba set on it. It's almost like Bubba got laid up for a week (see: "Hold my beer"), needed a project, and had a full parts bin.

Spring will be here in a few months, so if you don't have enough tomato stakes...

Actually, you could cut the barrel to take an inch or so off the breech, rechamber, recrown; use high-strength epoxy to re-set the action stud and re-attach barrel in the receiver, then, free-float the barrel in the stock. Then, if it doesn't shoot worth a darn, go the tomato-stake route.

If you go the tomato stake route, make sure to toss the bolt....you wouldn’t want to inadvertently arm those rebellious woodchucks!

Are you going to plug the holes? I would think appropriate diameter filter rod and a tig would get you back to square one.
This is definitely a gun that deserves paint instead of bluing when you're done.

Ya I'll plug them and weld them up, wish I had a tig but the mig will do. I just have to wait for when I go to my dads to weld it. What colors you had in mind lol.
