USSR, I believe you posted a load for .30-06 a while back that I would like to get the recipe for. It was a 190 SMK at 2900 fps (!). What was the OAL, powder, and primer used, and is it safe to use?
CBS220,
The LR 190gr .30-06 load was developed by myself and Shane (MontanaMarine on Sniper'sHide.com) about 6 years ago. You would not believe the naysayers when we first posted our results. Now, it usually doesn't even raise an eyebrow. The key to the load is Alliant Reloader 22. This double-based powder fills the case completely, and gives maximum velocity for heavy bullets in the '06. It also does the same thing for the 6.5x55. Shane has run the load thru Quick Load, an internal ballistics/pressure program, and the loads we developed are within the pressure specs for the cartridge. In fact, with my testing, I do not believe you can get enough RL22 powder in the '06 case to get in trouble. Here is my normal load:
Lapua or Lake City Match brass
190SMK bullet
Fed 210M primer
60.7gr RL22 powder
OAL of 3.315"
Velocity 2900fps
The overall length of 3.315" puts my bullet ogive about .010" off the lands, as measured with my Stoney Point OAL Gauge. Make sure you know where your throat is before seating your bullets to a particular depth. Hope that helps.
