I'm of the opinion that full sized guns are easier to shoot. Compact & subcompacts are easier to pick up & point in the shop but at the range they transmit recoil better & take more discipline to shoot properly. If it were me, I get a fullsize 45 & 9 and a 22lr conversion kit for range fun ;)

The full-size 45 and a compact (within reason) 9mm would be a good and practical choice.

My girlfriend wants me to get a 9mm so that she can use it at the range.

Get a 9mm and let her pick it out. She wants to go shooting with you! Don't screw it up. You pick the 45, she picks the 9mm and everyone has fun. If the funds are available, I'd suggest a 22 pistol for cheap range practice and to allow both of you to work on pistol shooting fundamentals without the noise and recoil of 9mm/45. 22's are lots of fun and very cheap to feed.
