I have just ordered a Remington 700VS in .223. I need to order scope bases and rings (I have a Leupold VX-2 4-12X scope for it). I was wondering if you all had recommendations on what type of rings and mounts I should use (Leupold brand, others?). Are one-piece or two-piece bases better? And when ordering, are you ordering one ring, for example, at $20 or a pair? Any help would be appreciated.

Scope mounting has become simpler in the last few years.:D
Get Leupold mounts, or Burris mounts. I prefer two piece, but your choice. Get a pair of Burris Signature rings, with the inserts.:scrutiny: You may need the insert kit if things are off a bit, not expensive, and simple to put in.
No more bedding mounts, lapping rings, and all that crap, and the inserts won't mar your scope!;)

I personally think the Leupold dual dovetail mounts I have look the best. I don't know if "cleaner lines" describe it best, but I think they look better, and they do the job quite well.

I should have clarified that a little. The “dove tails†(I think that’s the correct terminology) are the kind you “turn into†the base. Leupold offers a one piece base and a two piece base. I have a rifle with each, but I think the dual bases look the best.

Thanks, six and swifter. I think that gives me enough info to move forward! Appreciate the help!

Looking at bases and mounts in general, it seems to me that a one-piece base adds weight but little else. And, on a rifle with heavy recoil, three screws don't have the shear strength of the four screws of a two-piece system. (Some folks claim the one-piece "bridge" helps stiffen the receiver. I don't see how one little 6x48 screw can be of much help. :) )

On a rifle with essentially no recoil, I don't see how any system can fail to work. Seems to me that going by the aesthetics of the bases and rings is as good as any other way to judge.

Both Burris and Leupold are good for the bases. I have used both the one and two piece bases and definately prefer the 2 piece set up. I find the strap that passes over the action on the one piece base is always in the way when loading the rifle's magazine.
As to rings, I highly recommend the Burris Signature rings. These are the only rings I use. They are strong. The plastic inserts compensate for misalignment, prevent the tube from being crushed and ring marks on the scope. They run about $30 and are well worth the money. Check them out at www.burrisoptics.com

Thanks, Art and Swamp Yankee for the added input! I have decided, after considering all of your advice, to go with the Leupold Dual Dovetail two-piece bases and the Leupold Dual Dovetail rings. I checked out the Burris Signature rings and they look great. However, I wanted low matte rings and Midway didn't have the Burris Signature rings in the low configuration. Besides, I have always lapped my rings so that's not a problem. Appreciate all of your help!
