Scope Rings/Mount Question

I have a Remington 700VS in .223. I purchased a Leupold VX-2 4-12X40 scope for it from SWFA and asked them to send appropriate Leupold mounts and rings for it. When I mounted the scope, I ran into a problem. In order to get the scope back far enough for proper eye relief, the bell of the scope is in solid contact with the rifle barrel. I think I probably need higher rings but the problem is that I don't know what size I have as that wasn't noted on the invoice from SWFA (and I bought these several months ago; just got around to mounting the scope). Does anyone know what height rings I would need to keep a 40 bell scope off the barrel? Thanks!

Not really a lot of help here Prof but .. was trying to decide what rings I wanted for a Leupold scope I am putting on a spare Contender barrel ........ and wanted lowest that'd work.

I got them (Leupolds .. for a duplex ''cam'' type fitting) thru Natchez and IIRC they quote something like ...''low'', medium'' and ''high'' ... but the lows were dimensioned as I think .68" .... and so I worked out my needed clearance from tube to scope center and worked back from there.

In your case i think - go similar route .. see what extra you need and so what the actual ring ''lift'' needs to be and then go look ... even perhaps call them (Natchez seem quite helpful) .... and make sure you get what'll work. if you have ''lows'' then probably ''mediums'' will do it. A 40mm front optic does need some lift to get clearance .. had that prob before.

Which Leupold mounts and rings did you get?

hksw: I'm not sure exactly which I've got . The mounts are long and can be reversed to better fit the scope. The rings are both "turned in" when mounting.

I'm surprised that a 40mm objective would hit your barrel. I can only guess that you have "low" rings. "Medium" rings will work for 40mm and 50mm objective scopes. "High" will work, but will be higher than you need the scope to be.

Thanks, everyone, for the input. Following P95carry and Huck Phinn's advice, I discovered that ocabj hit it on the head: I have low mounts and need medium. Problem solved! Order sent for the rings!
