Well, the "head out to investigate ..." is a different subject that needs discussion, but while training, the thumb safety of my 1911 is off half way through the draw.

If I were clearing an area with my 1911, all safeties would be off and my trigger finger outside the trigger guard, the same as any other gun.

I don't see the 1911 as being much different from other guns, except in helping me keep rounds on target easier.
