a close call

Since you just walked in someone was watching you and seems to have tried to rob you except they brought a knife to a gun fight. I would at the very least get a nice high powered flashlight. Maybe set up some cheap portable lights on the outside to lit up the place even more. I would also as someone mentioned is put up newpaper on the windows so no-one can just hang outside and watch me work trying to get up the courage to try to do me ill-will.

Why is that everyone knows what a round being racked in a chamber sounds like? I read a few threads where just racking he slide scarred off the perp.

Why didnt you have a round in the chamber from the get go. You had the gun there but not loaded I dont get it.

It is always good to be prepared. But remember that there are innocent and less malicious interpretations. Society has a continum of people who do stupid things like tresspass.

It could have been a neighbor, wondering what the light and noise were about.

It could have been teens - loud music in the country late at night is virtually a beer (and mating) call.

It could have been a drunk, or somebody hoping to buy drugs.

Yes, trespassing, drunk in public, and drug transactions are all innocent and less malicious... nevermind that they have no LEGAL business being there in the first place.

If it was a well-meaning neighbor just checking, maybe the neighbor should have announced himself?

Good job, at least you had a weapon with you. I have seen several of these types of situations occur where no weapon was involved and it didnt go very well.
I agree with most of the replies. A good dog can hear stuff you cant, and if the dog is like mine, he is nosey and likes to snoop around when he thinks something is up.
The portable motion sensing lights are an option, but they never worked for me. I prefer the cheap tricks, simple and effective.
In my area, break ins in the county are the hot ticket. There arent as many county officers on patrol, and the county is more spread out making detection less of a worry.

I am glad your Ok though, it could have went south quick, but I am glad it didnt.

Cheap tricks are the best...

Bucket of water over an ajar door so it falls on the guy who opens it... fishing line across the threshhold so he trips and goes head first into a big clump of marbles, ball bearings, or thumbtacks... plank not nailed in on the porch so he steps on it and it pivots up on the support beam underneath and hits him in the forehead like Daffy Duck on a rake... which makes him fall backwards on a ladder which tips over the stack of knives on top which drop on him... the possibilities are endless!

thanks for all the responses. i have been back twice, no further issues, and yeah now i keep one in the chamber on my side!
i have not put up any lights, but i have been keeping little boobytraps (been eatin lots of peanuts!)around. i also check the place out well when i get there, and the car well when i leave. oh and keep the radio off.
to answer a few questions, the reason i didnt have one in the chamber, is this is my car gun, i have 3 vehicles i routinely drive, and a gun in each.
i have a 4 year old daughter who knows the danger in firearms and not to touch them without an adult allowing her to. but she is a 4 year old, and i know she couldnt rack the slide on a 45. but she could perhaps take it off safe and fire it.
as she gets older i may have to take further action to prevent her from coming in contact with them but this works for now, as the only unlocked guns are in my glove compartments and she is not allowed to play in vehicles alone.
the other thing to consider with the situation is the location. this house is a mile or so from mine, i know most folks in the area, its out in the country not many roving bands of thugs, and no one walking around at nite. i would say 9 out of 10 cars around here are unlocked, as well as most front doors to houses. so unfortunatly i was in my comfort zone. luckily enough i was uncomfortable enough to have the gun!!
thanks again for the tips
hopefully these stories will help keep other readers safe, as i can say since joining this message board i am alot more cautious of my situations and surrounding.

I'm glad you got through that one OK Soggysod! I'm with ya' on the little one in the house while you've got home/personal defense tools stashed in various places. Mine is 2 years old and always climbs over the bed rail where I keep my Mossberg 500 Rolling Thunder (5 in the tube, action open, cable locked). My next move is to but bike hooks up high near the cieling corners to hang the 500's up where she can't reach 'em until she's old enough to learn how to shoot & respect 'em. For now, I have to keep it locked unless I'm sleeping with it. I carry my Beretta 40S&W around the house & outside during the day:D

Just one more thing to think about after reading all the posts. One person mentioned a game camera - excellent idea. Check with your state's Attorney General's office to see if admissible audio visual evidence requires posted notification of such surveilance before it is allowed to be used in court.

Along that line - all available intel is good. I know it's hard to find the time, but staking out the place might provide some interesting intel. We have a team of guys (myself included) on our little end of the street who give each other a quick cell call and turn out when one of catches someone creeping around who doesn't belong here, especially late at night or when we see 'em walking between the houses, looking in windows or checking out our vehicles or outbuildings. We all carry, and are in contact with our cells. A few nights ago we had a group of teen agers trying to "shop" in one of our outbuildings and simultaneously trying to injure a tied-out dog and vandalize one of our vehicles. The police were notified and litterally, in 10 seconds, six CC adult neighbors (non-brandishing) were standing within 200 feet of the group. They retreated to the rear of our property lines and attempted to start a fire before departing accross an open field. Two of us walked for twenty minutes patrolling the area. During our walk we tracked them and located their residence without our being detected. The police showed up 30 minutes later and declined to pursue the matter because "no one got hurt and there was no property damage".

Maybe you could put up some game cameras and / or tree stands in some good observation / defensive positions near the house. You might even get some friends to stand watch (forward observer style - fully stealth) on the nights when the locals are most likely to become restless?

BTW: I'm an LE veteran and I don't (as a rule) keep one in the chamber. After witnessing a gun grab, it kinda changed my perspective. The BG pulled the trigger and nothing happened - that is until he caught a Mag Light in the face followed by mace. Also, all my "tools" have lasers. I know our DA personally and he likes us to give a person several chances to not get shot. BG gets audio warnings: slide / pump racking, safety clicking off and a verbal notice. BG gets a visual warning: shooter raises firearm to a firing stance and places red dot on BG's chest. If the BG "waives his chances" by cornering you in your home or by ignoring warnings or firing first, we're pretty much instantly justified baring any evidence of malice on our part.

So much to think about when you're just trying to mind your own business, work on your ranch and protect your family from "predators".:banghead:

I'm glad the sound of racking you slide scared the person off, however I have to agree with the others. Keep your pistol holstered at your hip with one in the chamber.

Also not sure what kind of sawing you are doing but the last remodel I did we made most of our cuts indoors with a shop vac hooked up to the saw. Not because we were worried about intruders but because it was cold outside.
