A couple of months ago I got an idea to buy many of the more budget priced 9mm on the market and then do a quick buy or not to buy review on each. I have now bought and shot several of those pistols and have a general idea as to whether or not they make good pistols.
Here is a link to the original thread.

And now several of the promised reviews in no particular order.

Kel Tec PF9

My opinion: What promised to be a very good conceal carry gun turned out to be a pile of junk (IMO YMMV). I shot around 100 rounds through this gun (which I bought used) and it had a number of failure to feeds, failure to extract, failure to go into battery, and several double feeds. I understand that many say they have a break in period but this gun was used and the previous owner had put several boxes through it. It may have just been me but I would not trust my life to this gun. 2/5 because it is comfortable to hold and carry.
Accuracy: This gun shot very high for me. I was unable to hit the target not more than 15 yards away. Sure I got them on the paper, but nowhere near the actual black. Though a 3" group did happen, it was after many tries and most of my groups were much larger. 1/5
Trigger: Sucks and I didn't expect to be any good for the price. Long creepy and strange feeling. I have shot toy guns that had similar triggers. 2/5
Reliability: As noted above, I wouldn't trust this gun. 2/5
Cost: 5/5 I paid 150 for this gun and got a box of ammo with it.
Shootability: This thing is uncomfortable to shoot, though it is comfortable to hold that doesn't mean it isn't a 9mm in a very small package. 3/5

Next up is the Kel Tec P11

My Opinion: I liked this gun much more than the PF9. I picked up 2 and both surprised me. They were both completely reliable up to the 150 rounds I put through each. I was expecting something similar to the PF9 and I would carry these guns without any qualms. Now I only put a small number of rounds down range but they did work through all of them. My overall opinion is favorable
4/5. I give this because I liked the combination of capacity and size in an affordable pistol. Even though it will take some time to get used to that trigger.
Accuracy: Here is where I have a lot of dislike for the gun. Even after putting 300 rounds down both, I never was able to keep them on target as I would like due to that heavy trigger. It was just too long and spongy. 2/5
Trigger: Long and spongy, too long and too spongy. And too heavy. 1/5
Reliability: It was for the few I put through it a reliable gun. 5/5
Cost: Neither cost me more than 200 so 5/5, Oh and these were both brand new. :D
Shootability: I found these much easier to shoot than the PF9 but still had some snap to them. Maybe it is just the 1/16 of an inch thickness difference between the two. Unfortunately the trigger caused me to shoot quite a bit off to the right. Though I did get several 3" groups at 15 yards, they were always off to the right of the target. 3/5

Smith and Wesson Sigma

My opinion: I broke this gun. I got it used (hard to find new) and have no idea how many rounds had been through it before I got it. I broke the striker after 150 rounds. Started out well and then it down hill from there. Light primer strike after light primer strike. I took it back where I got it and he gave me a full refund. So My review is this, get a new one. Don't bother with the old ones unless it is a really good deal as you never know who has done what to your gun.
NA/5
Accuracy: Consistently shot high and left for me and several others that shot it before it stopped working. I didn't bother measuring but they were palm size or smaller. 3/5
Trigger: Yeah it is every bit of awful that people make it out to be. 1/5
Reliability: No idea. It did work fine till the light primer strikes so I will give it a 2.5/5
Cost: Cost me a little over 200 so 4/5
Shootability: Feels nice in the hands and points very well. Recoil is minor. Trigger makes good accuracy very hard. 3/5

Smith and Wesson SD9VE

My Opinion: Buy one. They are very nice and I am going to keep this one. Shoots fine (trigger still isn't that great) points fine, very reliable light recoil etc. I really liked this gun, in every aspect. I only have one issue and that is the trigger.
Accuracy: Once I got used to the trigger I was getting 3" groups all day at 15 yards. 5/5
Trigger: It is heavier than a glock but very consistent in how it pulls. Breaks cleanly and is smooth with no grit. But it does take some getting used to. I had to put about 100 rounds through it before I started improving in shooting. 2.5/5
Reliability: It worked. I tried and failed to make this gun malfunction. 5/5
Cost: It is the most expensive that I have thus far bought for this project. Cost me 319 +tax 3/5
Shootability: Besides the trigger, great shooter. Im keeping this one.

Sar B6P

My opinion: I had the compact version of this CZ knockoff. It would make a great bedside, house or even truck gun. If it were bigger. Since I only had the smaller one I can't comment on the full size version but the smaller one is far too awkward for concealed carry and doesn't hold enough rounds for home defense. It is slightly larger than a Glock 19 and holds 13 rounds in the mag. Plus it has sharp edges everywhere and they will pinch you even if you are not carrying it. Though it was very reliable it did break also. They steel slide inserts broke off after about 90 rounds (though I didn't figure it out till I got home and shot it several times while it was broke, it did function even with a broke steel insert). 2/5
Accuracy: Its a double/single, so first was always a flyer where all the following shots were in a 2.5" cirlce. 4/5
Trigger: Double action was very heavy, long but consistent and smooth. Single action was a dream. 4/5
Reliability: Gun worked even when its guide inserts were broken. 5/5
Cost: These are going for around 300 but I paid 240 for mine. 4/5
Shootability: If it weren't for all the sharp edges it would get a 5/5 but as it is, it gets a 4/5.

Thanks for checking this out and I will give updates as to some of the other guns on the original list.

Your experiences don't reflect mine. I have shot all of the ones you have except the star. C'est la vie.

I have fired both the Kel-Tec PF-9 and P-11, actually owned the PF-9 for a while. I can't say I completely disagree with your review of the PF-9, as mine had a fair number of failures, but rumor is the newer variants are improved. (Mine was an early model.)

The P-11 was OK. The trigger was just as mushy as you describe and very long with a heavy pull. It's more similar to a DA revolver IMO, which I think throws a lot of newer shooters who've never spent time learning to manage that trigger system. For the price and size, the P-11 is tough to beat. However, it was not as reliable or shootable as the larger Glock 26.

As for the Sigmas, I have a friend with an older one in .40 S&W. Not sure how long he's had it, but every time we've gone shooting together it perks right along, chugging through boxes of ammo.

Sar B6P

It would make a great bedside, house or even truck gun.
They steel slide inserts broke off after about 90 rounds

Even if it still functioned, I don't think many people would characterize a gun that breaks after 90 rounds as "great".

But thanks for the review, I was thinking about picking up the full size version of this gun for a car gun - either that or the Kahr CT9 which is also very cheap at the moment.

I think I'll wait for more reviews of the B6P before deciding.

Nice work with your review of budget 9mm. pistols. I had a KelTec PF9 and while the gun operated and functioned propely I just couldn't get past the really long and heavy trigger pull on it.

I agree about the S&W sdve. I got mine LNIB for about $200. The trigger isn't great, but it has been 100% reliable.

It is not a great pistol like my CZ75 or Beretta 92 or Browning High Power , but it is a good pistol and probably the best you will find in that price range.

I don't put much store in reviews of guns purchased "used" because you just can't know what happened to the gun in it's earlier life. I bought a PF9 that had every problem imaginable and took it back to KT. They rebuilt it and said it actually had a P-11 barrel on it!
I too like the S&W.
I have two Hi Point C9's that certainly fit the "budget" category. I am still trying to find an ammo they don't like or waiting for something to break.

Even if it still functioned, I don't think many people would characterize a gun that breaks after 90 rounds as "great".

I was being a bit sarcastic. The gun is too big for carry but too small for a home defender IMO. It really isn't great for anything and I don't see why it exists. The larger full size however holds 17 or 18 rounds and I bet it would be great for home defense.

Buying a used gun at a pawn shop is almost always a gamble.

The only guns I've bought used and never ever gave me problems were Glock!

Oh I still haunt the pawnshops, but I look carefully before I leap.

I have bought several that were fine and a couple that were trouble. They have all been fixable but you could tell they had been used and abused in most instances.

Buying used guns is a risk and in a way makes me wonder if you got a bad one. Appreciate the reviews....but folks often dump problem guns and don't tell the buyers of the issues. If all had been brand new it would be much more accurate review. That said you were reviewing what you got and some folks do buy used guns.....so it is what it is.

The larger full size however holds 17 or 18 rounds and I bet it would be great for home defense.

Except that the steel inserts breaking is not really a function of it being a compact version (it's not that compact anyway). I'm thinking that they have a problem, and if the inserts break on the 13-round version, they'll break on the 16 round version.

I'm glad you reviewed this, I was close to just buying one. I think the Turkish gun manufacturers are putting out pretty good steel CZ 75 clones, but maybe the world of polymer is a whole new ballgame for them.

Thanks for putting together & sharing the excellent reviews, improperlyaged! That obviously took a lot of time and effort.

Of the pistols reviewed, I only have experience with the PF9.

I bought mine, NIB, in mid'07 and, after a brief test period, have carried it as my Primary ever since.

At ~19oz loaded, it is snappy ... but I do not mind its inherent snappiness because I do not consider it to be a range pistol, and it shoots accurately for me. I also do not mind the long trigger pull as that is its only "safety".

I have the grip covered with an innertube sleeve, the trigger guard carefully thinned where it meets the grip and the mags all sport modded finger extensions.

The only thing that I did not like (other than the plastic followers on the mags) was the trigger. I rectified that issue by installing a Northwood trigger (taking the opportunity to polish the Internals while I had it apart) ... and now it is finally a pleasure for me to shoot (yes, even with the snap).

That said, over on the KelTecOwnersGroup forums I have read on several occasions of folks that did not get Good Ones like mine so it appears to me that the quality of the PF9s has always been a bit spotty. As a general rule, one should expect to invest a little effort in a new PF9 prior to heading for the range with a box of ammo. ;)

Been a long time since Ive been here. I own a Sigma and it eats anything you put in it.

I carry a P11. It never fails and its hard to beat the size for the amount of rounds. I can carry it in my pocket (Wrangler cargo shorts) but usually carry OWB with a T-Shirt to cover.

Heh it says I last visited in October of 09.

I'm back in Florida now and waiting for my permit to arrive. I do like supporting Florida manufacturers too.

Buying a used gun at a pawn shop is almost always a gamble.

I actually only got one of the guns on the list at a pawn shop. It was one of the P11's but it was brand new. The other used guns in the review come from a local gun shop that gives me good deals. The SAR came from his shop, one of the P11's, the sigma did as well. The guns were each gone over and if I thought they had too much wear or use I didn't buy them. Nearly all guns looked brand new. The Sigma is definitely one of the older ones as it came with 10 round mags.

Thanks for the reviews. I've also been impressed by the SD9VE. It fits great in my hand, and so far it's functioned just fine. The trigger kinda sucks, but other than that, I don't have a problem with it - especially for $300.

Except that the steel inserts breaking is not really a function of it being a compact version (it's not that compact anyway). I'm thinking that they have a problem, and if the inserts break on the 13-round version, they'll break on the 16 round version.

I should say that I took this back to my local gunshop and it was shipped to EAA and they had it fixed and shipped back within a week. I sold it to fund the other reviews. I have seen several vids and reviews online and it seems as though they are good. I probably just got a bad one. That being said, I won't be buying another one for the reasons in the review.

CDNN is selling the Walther PPX for $279. That is an incredible deal for a real Walther built in Ulm, Germany.

I'm not familiar with the other guns but I have the sar compact. I guess I got a good one. Mine has been fine. It is the same size as my cz compact except it is thinner in the grip and is quite a bit lighter. They seem to be a witness clone as I can interchange my slides with the sar and my witness.

I think your review was pretty much the norm for the pistols in that you tested. No real surprises there. Generally with guns like everything else in life, you get what you pay for.

My PF-9 has been totally reliable from time I removed from box . Yours shot high mine shoots about 3" low at 15 yards. I know a close up gun But into days world . Just might need to know what pistol can do a longer than 7 yards.

I shoot 115 gr I know lot of people go to the heavy bullet. I will stay with the 9mm as designed
