> Washington, DC - In a New York Post article released June 26 "Armed and
> Safer Iraqis," American Enterprise Institute Scholar John R. Lott Jr.
> claims that an armed Iraqi populace is a safer Iraqi populace. Since
> publishing his 1998 book More Guns, Less Crime, Lott has served as the
> mouthpiece of the National Rifle Association (NRA), the primary lobby
> group of the gun industry.
>
> "The current situation in Iraq once again proves that Lott's conclusions
> are flawed," says Handgun-Free America Executive Director Chris McGrath.
> While a May proclamation by the Coalitional Provisional Authority (CPA)
> banned many types of large weapons and explosives across the country,
> Iraqi citizens are allowed to keep many weapons, including AK-47s, in
> their homes or businesses and are able to carry guns on the streets with a

> day brings more reports of looting, murder, and chaos in that country."

> controversy over the source of a statistic used on page 3 of More Guns,
> Less Crime, where Lott stated, '98% of the time that people use guns
> defensively they merely have to brandish a weapon to break off an attack.'
> Lott has claimed this figure originated from various sources, including
> The Los Angeles Times, Gallup and Peter Hart Research Associates. None of
> these sources conducted this survey, however. Finally, Lott claimed the
> 98% figure resulted from a phone survey he conducted, although he has been
> unable to produce any data from the survey due to a 'computer crash.'
>

Who needs Lott? :) Just point out the work of Wright, Rossi and Daly ("Under the Gun", etc.). A datum from that book, about handguns: Of those shot with long guns, 2/3 die and 1/3 live. Of those shot with handguns, 1/3 die and 2/3 live.

Interviews with prisoners in Florida's Raifor Pen showed that were handguns not available, Bad Guys would acquire long guns and hacksaws.

IOW, eliminate all handguns and the death rate will go up.

The part about Mary Rosh is pretty ugly. Lott and his son posted as "Mary Rosh" in a bunch of newsgroups. Mary was supposed to be a former student, and she gushed in the most improbable way about Lott's "genius" and his "way with his students." He did it from his own machine so the IPs matched precisely. Why he did it I'll never know. Vanity makes us do strange things.

As for Iraq, of course, they're absolutely right. Unless, that is, there were some other factor involved that might explain the violence and chaos in Iraq. I can't think of anything except 25 years of brutal repression followed by a brief but nasty war. . . . . but that couldn't be it.

I don't know much about the guy, but if he pulled something like that then he should stop publicly fighthing for our cause. Someone from the other side knowing that about him would be stupid to not be extremely skeptical of any word he's ever wrote or said.

Yeah, it's sad. What gets lost in the blather about the misbehavior is that his research work was subjected to a lot of peer review--and passed. Even people who inherently opposed his thesis couldn't disprove his conclusions.
