It was very windy on the day of this shooting. My bullets did not group as well as normal but all within the bulls eye at 100 yards. Ammo is Remington V-MAX featuring the 33 grain sharp tipped bullet. This is hard hitting 22 MAG ammo. I've toppled many groundhogs with chest shots; the bullets hit like mini-grenades.

The 17 HMR cartridge gets all the attention these days but I'm sticking with my 22 MAG.

I sure do miss groundhog hunting, around Quarryville. That and deer hunting are the only thing I miss from up north.

My son bought me a Marlin in .22WMR for fathers day a few years ago. He had been wanting a 17HMR so like the great dad I am, I bought him one for his birthday. I would take my .22mag over the 17hmr any day of the week. Absolutely love it for anything less than deer in my area.

T.R.;

I too prefer the .22 magnum over any of the .17's. However, being a lefty, I'm not familiar with the RH selection of guns in the caliber, what's that platform please?

My current magnum is a Miroku/Browning LH T-bolt target/varmint. What I'm waiting for is a CZ LH in .22 magnum. Ain't holdin' my breath though.

i have the same rifle a marlin 882L in .22 mag. my rifle loves CCI maxi mag,s and will damn near shoot one hole groups at 50yds and with 10 clicks up is dead on at 100yds and shoots 1 to 1-1/4 " groups. the taco golden antler scope does the rifle justice. the only thing i did was buy a magazine to make it handier to carry, a worth while addition. eastbank.:cool:

I love the 22 magnum round but can ever find ammo for it in my parts. Do yall buy ammo online or what?

Kdunn;

It's not exactly rare around here, but neither is it on the shelf everyday. I got a brick as a Christmas present this past set of holidays. Maybe it depends on how big an order your fav big-box store put in four years ago.

What scope is that on your gun? I like the turrets.

its a golden antler tasco 3x9-32 with parllex adjustment and 1/4 click turrets and fast focus. they are not very expencive, but fine for a light calibered rifles. eastbank.

Ammo

Walked into the Academy local to me yesterday and they had it behind the service desk. 2 box max. Had the wife with me. CCI 40gr HP. They also had CCI 33gr VMax. 1st time I've seen the .22WMR there in 6 months ( although I only go in there once a month or so ).

Just took receipt of my first. 22wmr rifle. Ruger American predator. Limited edition, oversized bolt, od green stock, 18" bbl. Only able to shoot it at 25 yes but very impressed with it. I can see this becoming one of my favorites. $265.00 from Whittaker Guns, KY.

I never really have any trouble finding .22WMR ammo around here. It's not overly abundant, but it's nowhere near the problem with LR. I can almost always find 50-round boxes. It's not the cheapest ammo to shoot, though. Wish I could reload it.

That and convenient trout fishing. Chuck hunting and fishing always competed for my free time during the summer months.

I also favor the 22 Mag over 17 HMR even though it is a bit more accurate. The 17 HMR has run its course for the most part. People that want them, have them.

The 17HMR, IMO is the last new production cartridge to have ever really meant anything to the firearm buying public. I do not really think it dented the 22WMRs following though.

I have always kept some .22 Magnums around, mainly for occasional use in my Ruger Single Six. Might be kind of interesting to get a .22 Magnum rifle and see what kind of accuracy I could get out of it.

22 mag is one of my favorites for moving kids 'up' from the humble 22.

They certainly seem to think they are wielding the hammer of Thor compared to the 22LR. ;) while not quite ready too move up to centerfire.

I like the variety of bullet choices in 22 Mag and 17HMR over the 22, and the increased range.

Cabela's often has them. I saw a lot at other local sporting goods stores.
You can usually get them on-line with Midway or Cabela's.

I tried a .17, didn't like it. Around my place you can still buy truck loads of .17 ammo but .22 mag is almost non-exsistant. Wasn't the .22 shortage supposed to be over by now? Makes me wonder what's happening in spite of all the " We're going as hard as we can." talk. .223 ammo is cheaper than .22 mag and there's a ton of it. I think perhaps someone has miscalculated.
