At home, posting on THR instead of working.
....pick one and only one to fulfil BOTH pest control (primary aim) and trouble maker deterence (secondary aim) duties. The choices are:

1) Marlin model 980S

2) Winchester Wildcat 22
http://www.winchesterguns.com/prodinfo/catalog/detail.asp?cat_id=525&type_id=100&cat=018C

3) Ruger 77/22

4) Remington Model 504

5) Anschutz 1416

6) CZ 452

Lets also assume that the choosen rifle has to last at least 15 years with routine user maintenance and iron sights must be relied on (no scopes used).

I see no reason why any of them would be problematic for the noted duties. They are all well made, and quite accurate out of the box. I like the Rem, I'd have gone with the Marlin 925 instead.

But, if price is not an issue... why not just get one of each and locate them in different rooms of the house??? :neener:

Have a few Anschütz and CZ rifles. IMO, for performance/dollar, it is very hard to beat the CZ. For high quality, even for the lower end rifles, the Anschütz is the one. Have seen a few 77/22's at the range and they could not meet the performance level of the Anschützes and CZs. Haven't seen (closely examine and seen people shoot) the others, however.

+1 to the Marlin 925, because that is what I have and it's just a daisy of a rifle. I just got back from exterminating a sacks worth of nasty spuds with it! :D

i pity the pest that gets lined up in the irons of this thing.

for trouble makers.... well that would be a different caliber.

havent heard any positive feed on the remmy, the cz or the winny would be my choice, cz's have the ooh aaah factor, and winnies come with FOUR MAGS!

I've got an old Remington M512X turnbolt I got on my 9th birthday. I'm 53 now. That thing is still as accurate as ever and that's more accurate than any .22 I own or any .22 this cheap has any right to be. It's tube fed. I've shot a LOT of squirrel with this gun. I know Anschutz guns are fantastic, but my heart says Remington.

Don't forget Kimber of Oregon and Kimber America...some of the finest 22 Rifles made in the U.S.A. I have no fault with the other memtioned rifles either.

Great 22 Bolt !!!

I have a couple of different Ruger M77/22's that are just amazing rifles.:)
They both shoot better than I can hold any more. My sons (24,30 yrs ) can both shoot them well enough to be scary accurate.
They also feel like a full sized Hunting rifle and the safeties work exactly like the safety of my Mark 2 Ruger rifles.
They are a bit pricey but, then you get what you pay for, in spades!!!:D
And they are made in the USof A and that helps provide Jobs here......

CZ All the way! Great accuracy and the best bang for the buck out there.

I have to agree. There are better rifles, but not for the price.

But the I also really like to plink with a Marlin 39A.

Marlin with out a doubt. I own a 22mag. great gun, reliable, durable, good accuracy.

Having owned a recent Marlin bolt action .22LR (981T) I would recommend against those. The .22WMR rifle actions are better.

I have a CZ 452 Varmint, and have handled the Lux. The Lux is a little long but the extra sight radius should be helpful. Plus, it balances like a dream and is fairly light. Of the rifles you listed, that would be my choice.

jmm

You know, I just picked up a Tula-made TOZ-78-1 from AIm for $140 new and I love the heck out of it. I shoots FAR better than it should. Too bad it wasn't a C&R.

That long barrel sure is quiet though.

After just coming back from the range and shooting my CZ452 trainer, I have to highly recommend the CZ 452 line of .22's.

The sights alone are worth half the price of the rifle.

I have an all weather 77/22 in .22 WMR that is my go everywhere rifle. I think it's the nearly perfect rimfire rifle for the two missions you are asking about. And since you don't mention plinking or range work as a primary mission of a .22, that one is my suggestion. I also have a 77/22 in blue steel and walnut that I like a lot too. But now it's mostly a fun gun, the magnum is the using rifle.

There is no denying that the Anshutz is the top of the heap here. They make spectacular guns but at a price. If you can affored it I would probably go this route.

That being said the CZ452 is such an incredible firearm for the price. It is one of those few items that I actually belive you are getting more value then the cost of the item.

I have a CZ 452 Varmint that is just an awesome firearm. It feels like a "real" gun and is just freakishly accurate. It will definitely last more than 10 or 15 years, more like a generation or three.

I just bought a CZ 452 FS in 17 HMR. I would have likely choosen the same rifle if I was in the mood for a 22. They are great shooters for the money and all steel too, no plastic I`m aware of.

BTW
I have a 77/22 and the CZs I`ve seen at the range normally will out shoot it. Although it isn`t bad at all for your needs. The difference is maybe a tenth inch at 50 yds.........
