Okay. I've been doing some research and have decided on an XD over a GLOCK.
I'm getting the 9mm service model.

A few questions.
If a cartridge is in the chamber. Is the firing pin spring under tension?

Another one.
Can I shoot the following cartridges out of this gun?
9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum, 9mm NATO, and 9x19mm

I'm assuming they're the same cartridges, just different designations?

Thank you!

From what I've read, yes.

Yes you can shoot those cartridges. Yes, there are all the same.

First off great choice. I love my XD in .45acp

1)yes, the firing pin spring under is under tension that is why the "indacator" is sticking out the back of the gun, so you can feel/see that.

2) I am no 9 mm buff, but I think all thoes should work wait to see what the smarter people say

I've heard that the spring isn't under tension in Glocks then.

This may become an issue if left sitting too long. (Obviously I won't because I'll shoot the S**t out of it!) But still. Stuff happens.

Perhaps somebody was wrong about the GLOCKs not being under any tension with a cartridge chambered.

Under full tension.

9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum, 9mm NATO, and 9x19mm

Only if you bought the XD9. :) (Those are all different names for the same cartridge.)

from my understanding, the spring being undertension is not an issue. you can keep a spring relaxed or under tension without detrimental effects/wear.

it's the CYCLING of the spring or frequent discharge that wears out a spring. (i.e. it's better to keep a spring under tension for 1 yr as opposed to releasing the tension every day to "save" the spring.)

same reason why it's better to just keep a mag loaded as opposed to loading/unloading constantly.
