Might have a chance to pick up one used for @ $350 or so. Briefly looked at it on a whim while browsing for nothing in particular at a local shop, and it's just stuck with me - felt good to handle, comfortable in the hand, pointed naturally, trigger pull was, well, fair (heavier than I'm used to, but that's expected on an XD?). It's butt-ugly, but then I'm no great looker either, so I suppose it's a good match....I believe it was the 4" service model (full-size frame, 4" barrel), looks like new, no easily discernable wear. This would be my first 9mm - have a .40 S&W (4006) and several revolvers. Gonna go back next week and investigate further, but I have a few questions:

1 - how well does this this thing handle aftermarket high cap magazines? Or more properly, are all the aftermarket mags out there created equal and function equally well, or are some brands best avoided? Will want to pick up a few extras if I follow this XD route.

2 - If I buy a 9mm, it's gonna be for a "fun gun" plinker with some casual IDPA use, so it's gonna get fed mostly with the cheapest low-buck bulk and surplus ammo I can find. I'm not planning on adding 9mm to the reload shelf anytime soon, not with all the cheap ammo currently available. How well does the XD handle a variety of cheap ammo? I can't quote any brand names or sources, except picture the cheapest import, surplus, or reload stuff available at gun shows or mail order. I won't rule out CCW, if I ever follow thru with it, after which better quality ammo would start appearing, but just the cheapo stuff for now.

3 - Since I've never shot any combat tupperware, how does felt recoil compare to a heavier all steel gun like a S&W 4006 (full frame 4" barrel, except a .40 versus the 9mm XD)? I handload for my S&W, and don't push the max loads by any means, so recoil is lighter than with a full-on .40 load.

4 - I've done quite a bit a web and forum searching on the XD, and it seems to be a very well regarded pistol, not as polarizing or controversial as Glocks can be. (Are Glock owners related to Dillon reloading owners? The same rabid loyalty seems to flow thru their collective veins....). Is there anything to pay particular attention to/watch for when looking at a used one? How's the $350 range for a one (not sure at the moment what else comes along for the price, just the XD and one mag probably).

Thanks!

GP

Factory mags for the XD-9 are pretty cheap! You can get them from CDNN for $24.99 + shipping.

As for ammo reliability, I can only add my experiance and that is I have not had a single problem using Walmart white box, wolf, gold dot and some federal military surplus ammo I have.

Very good trigger, very good grip, at least for my smallish hands.

Exellent accuracy too.

I shot a 9mm XD next to a Sig 229 .40 yesterday. Even though the XD was lighter (polymer vs. aluminum), it was much more controlable. I'd take the XD over the Sig any day.

trigger pull was, well, fair (heavier than I'm used to, but that's expected on an XD?).

I shot a compact XD, in .40, yesterday. The trigger on this was, IMHO, pretty darn good. Of course, this might have been factory tweaked -- this was provided by a Springfield rep at an event, them being just down the road a piece from the gun club I was shooting at.

I didn't even notice the recoil, even in the compact .40.

Handled pretty nicely too, for all of it being a tiny little thing. I'd get one.

I bought a xd-40 a week and a hlf ago and I love it

just read june july g & a handguns mag they did a 20,000 round torture test on a xd-9
two thing
1) they stated that the trigger gets even better over time(2000-2500 rounds)

2) gun functioned flawlessly, and it was purchased a a gun shop not sent to them from Springfield

I may never give up my 1911 but the xd-40 will a lot of range time also!!!!

btw I paid $435.00 for 3 hi cap mags a xd gear holster (paddle)
XD-40 4" service

great gun

I bought an XD9 Service model about a month ago for my 14 yr old son to shoot IDPA with.

So far it has been absolutely perfect thru about 1000 rounds of CCI Blazer aluminum. The most trouble free handgun I have ever owned so far.

It even functions perfectly with Promag aftermarket magazines. Factory mags have been hard to find but are now beginning to show up in the stores again. As has been stated already, they can be found for about $25.00.

$350.00 is a great price, I'd jump on it if I were you.

BTW...my trigger breaks at about 4.5 lb., Not too bad for a factory trigger in my opinion!

I've had one for about 9 months and it has been perfect, not fte,ftf nothing.I have shot all kinds of ammo thru it incl surplus 9mm w/out a hitch. For that kind of money you can't go wrong.mine probably has 3000 rds thru it.The only thing done to mine was a set of meb night sights.

First, $350 for any of the XD models sounds like a good deal assuming the pistol is in good shape and comes with at least two mags. It sound like you were looking at the basic 4" Service model which is identical to mine except for the slide material. I strongly endorse my XD.

I have five high capacity mags from Springfield. Three came with the pistol and I bought two afterwards. They were about $25 each and work perfectly.

I've now put over 6000 rounds through my XD without a single hiccup. I use WWB 115gr FMJ most often but have used similar loads from Remington, CCI Blazer and Magtech. I've also fired WWB 115gr, Hydrashock 147gr and Winchester Ranger 124 gr SXT +p JHPs. All have fed and ejected without a single problem. BTW, I do CCW it in an IWB COM-3 holster from HBE.

Recoil is just fine since it is a 9mm. It probably has less kick than your .40 S&W.

I recommend you snap it up before someone else does.

A good buy.
If it feels good put your money down.
As stated, factory 15 shot magazines are available and inexpensive, avoid the aftermarkets.
The XD is a Croation made Glock for people who don't like Glocks.

I have an admitted bias against polymer guns, especially Glocks. They are great weapons, no question, just not my cup a tea. I rented an XD-9 and am convinced this is a superior pistol. Very accurate without trying and no hicups. If my wife didn't limp wrist it (like Glocks), she'd have one, but it was great for me. If I didn't have 4 or 5 9MM's in the same class, I'd get one.
