Ive had my first handgun which is a Springfield XD 40 Service model for about 3 weeks and I have cleaned it a couple of times already. I followed instructions that came with my Hoppes kit and it said to oil the outside of the gun which I did with patches and then wiped it all down with a cloth rag. Am I supposed to leave the exterior slightly oiled and shiny or am I supposed to wipe it all off after I put a nice layer on? I ask this because the slide looks really dry and Im a bit concerned about rust developing. My other question is since I dont get to shoot too often because of the cost of ammo and range time Ive been thinking about reloading since Ive heard its cheaper and can be more accurate as well. Is there a good quality kit out there for first timers thats safe and easy to use? I dont know anything about reloading so Id like to know if there is a lot of risk involved in doing this and am I able to mildly experiment without risking injury? Thank you

External wipe down? ..... a CLP cloth will leave a useful film ... RIG grease even better ... without looking too ''greasy'' if excess is lightly removed. Better to store with a tad too much - just wipe again when you shoot.

Reload gear?? ..... For reasonable price Lee could kick you off ... http://www.leeprecision.com/ - they do a sorta starter kit.

But do as a must - get books ... load data, reloading methods etc ... read first then buy gear - better still find someone near who reloads .... nothing like hands on help. Lee's Loading book 2nd edition is not a bad place to start.

Oh and ... do some search on THR here - lots of good info buried --- but accessible if you look.

Yeah I found some good reload info in the reloading section of this site. I am overwhelmed by the amount of information I just read so I think I'll just get a job and buy my ammo :( . Thanks for the grease info ;)

Reloading will be cheaper only if you do it A LOT, ie. thousands of rounds.

Most shooters will save money by purchasing from Wal-Mart or in bulk over the internet.

XD40,

Don't quote me on this but I believe the WWB (Winchester White Box) 40S&W is ~$16 at Wal-Mart. I usually get the 9mm WWB FMJ Value Packs for ~$11. I just picked-up my first box of el cheapo UMC-Remington 9mm JHP Value Pack for ~$14! :what: I really hope this stuff shoots ok in M9. Will find out tomorrow when I get to the range.

xd- reloading isn't hard, it is enjoyable, and quality handloads are far better than anything the factories put out. if you are interested in handloading, i suggest you pursue it a little more.

then, perhaps, you can answer that age old question for yourself: do you shoot so you can reload, or do you reload so you can shoot?

Cool can I get that Marine Cloth at Wally Palace? I cleaned and oiled my gun today and I found that using a glasses cleaning cloth worked really really good. My gun looks new again!

I would say you start saving money right away. Using lead bullets I can load 1,000 rounds of .40 for about $58. You can't even buy 9mm's for $6 per hundred. If you want to shoot a lot, then don't overlook reloading.

I have had my XD40 since last September and have ordered my 4th case of ammo. Have fired almost 3000 rounds and no problems. Since I shoot 2 rounds of PPC twice a week, plus competitions, I clean my gun after every trip to the range with G96 Complete GUN Treament. This spray cleans, lubricates and protects; plus it smells GOOD. :) After letting it dry about 10 minutes, all of the parts are slick and smooth and the action works every time, even in rapid fire. :)

I use CCI Blazer Brass 40 S&W 180gr that I buy at WalMart for $7.94 a box. It is easier to shoot than Winchester, less kick, plus it is cheaper. My self defense ammo is Federal 180gr. Hydra-Shok which has the same point of impact as my practice ammo.
