Have been lurking, for a while. (Okay, a long while.) First BP revolver is due to arrive, this coming weekend. So, I figure it’s about time to grab a moniker and get on my posters.

The revolver, mentioned above, is an 1858 New Army Target model. This, for several reasons: Have read almost nothing but good reports about the ’58, on this forum – and, most seem to recommend it as above-average for C&B beginners. That would be me. Also, believe I managed to pick it up, NIB, for a fair price.

Already stapled the Wish List to my forehead. But, that’ll be for a different post.

Have come about an interest in black powder, via an interest in air guns. Which, I’m told, is sort of an arse-backwards way of getting to this point, from center and rim-fire weapons. No excuses are offered.

Would like to thank all of you for helping me to make an informed decision, as to where my money will be thrown, this time. Appreciate the information and some downright interesting reading.

BP shooting is a 12 step program
Step 1. Talk about buying a C&B Revolver
Step 2. Admitting that there is no greater power than the smell of BP soot
Step 3. buying a C&B Revolver
Step 4.buying another C&B Revlover
Step 5. Buying another C&B Revolver
step 6. Just one more gun dear I promise its the last one.
Step 7. But honey I got a great deal on this one.
Step 8. Buy another gun
step 9. ........ you get the picture it s very addicting then your gonna want a smoke pole and at some point a walker its never ending I am trying to figure out a way to get the smoke into my viens straight away. LOL:D
Welcome aboard.

Bigbadgun – Thank to you and scrat, also, for the welcome.

Guess I have an advantage where asking permission, or begging forgiveness (my personal favorite, given druthers), is concerned. Rather than ask each other about anything, my gal and I tend to surprise one another. A lot.

Am looking to find out if she’s going to surprise me, by liking the smell of black powder. She hasn’t exactly warmed to the idea of things that make a loud bang, yet. But, she’s getting curiouser and curiouser. At least I don't hear, "Put those things away" anymore.

Pancho - Historically, it doesn’t seem that asking stupid questions is a real huge problem. Heck, I have a genuine talent for ‘em. More often, the problem seems to come in, when someone’s stupid answers are questioned.

Thats me.
hahahah
you guys all saw it from the begining. in less than 40 days i went from a 50 cal cva to
1. CVA Buckhorn .50 cal
2. 1851 Navy 44
3. 1860 Army 44
4. 1847 Walker 44

Now im looking for my next toy.

Heck im casting my own round balls and REAL bullets for the 50. Heck you almost got me into making black powder now too.

Good Lord. 40 days to a Walker. Man, you got it bad.

Took me 30 years to get my first Walker, but less than 40 days later I got my second one. Of course, I got sidetracked by the Dragoons for many years.

Welcome, Perk. These guys are all a bunch of liars and thieves. Best group of folks I've come across in a long time, and I've been to two county fairs and a few goat ropings.

Pancho – Have taken a look, but have not gone through all of it, just yet. Have, actually, been waiting on going through the information until this weekend, when the new arrival is due. I tend to learn faster when I’ve got one of what I’m reading in my hands. Reckon one might say I’ve been saving it.

Thank you for making sure it didn’t passed by, though. From what I’ve seen, would have been a shame to have missed the info. Am looking forward to the reading.

Mykeal – Thank you for the welcome. Just going, solely, upon the way I’ve been received, here; certainly must agree with you, about this being a good group, thus far.

Perk welcome to the BP sub forum. I think you will like your Remington.

I am ate up with BP now. It is consuming me since re-entering with my 1858 Remmy. My cartridge pistols just kind of sit in the safe with a sad look on their faces now.

The best advice I have for you is to not drink and surf sites that sell cap and ball revolvers while you have a credit card in your possession, heh.
That is the first rule I live by.

Im283 – ‘Preciate the welcome. Will try to keep your advice in mind. Will try. Just get so darned forgetful, sometimes, when I’ve been drinking, you understand.

Macmac – Have mentioned, elsewhere, of the heights my stupidity may achieve, whilst under challenge. Please, sir, do not taunt the stupidity.

That said, I’ll remember your words of comfort, when the inevitable happens – and will endeavor to not abuse the privilege.

Case in point. Just posted the same durned thing, twice. And, so it begins...

That wasn't you really, the forums can cause a "double tap" so to speak. It looks like it isn't going anywhere, so the button gets hit again, then bam! two posts.

Thanks, dwave. Truth be told, yours were among the posts that convinced me to go with the '58 .

Well, I'm glad that I helped you choose a firearm, but man I hope you love it, or you might blame it on me! :)

Dwave – Will remember about the post not taking, for the first go-’round, upon occasion. Suppose a bit more patience will come in handy, there.

Much as I’m looking forward to the weekend (that patience thing, again), there is sincere doubt that blame will enter into anything. Way back, it-just-seems-like-yesterday-ago, me Paw got me a taste of the black powder shooting. Been savoring the idea of coming back around to it, for some time, now. Cartridge-fire doesn’t involve the pace of near ritual, as does black powder. And, air guns just don’t have the flash, bang, or aroma of a good BP round, as I recall.

‘Course, even after the revolver gets here, I’m still going to have to garner a few supplies, before the real fun begins. We have a local gun show coming up, the middle of this month. So, plans involve what I like to call, My Kind of Shopping Trip.

Besides, worst case, I have a real problem with blame, anyway. Seems there’s already way too much of that going around. We prefer the phrase, “Learning Experience,” thank you very much.

Dwave –

About mid-afternoon, on Saturday, there came a knock upon my door. Opened the door and there she was, all safely ensconced within layers of boxes and packing. Had purchased the revolver, from an individual in another state, who did a fine job of wrapping up the ol’ ’58 . (Told him so, too.)

This particular piece is a Pietta model, which was originally sold by Cabela’s. It came to me, in the original box (which still has all of the original stocking stickers affixed). The original Styrofoam, yet, lies within that box, as well.

As this is a new/old in box item, it hasn’t been fired, yet. Will be taking it apart and smoothing/lubing a few things (thank you, Old Fluff), before heading out to the range. Have to say that more than a little attention was paid to how it was originally put together. Action is tight, but smooth. Rattles just like it should. Grips match, in color, and fit right where they’re supposed to. Even the polish was well done. Looks like I’ll be the first to put the cylinder marks on this revolver, too.

Sadly, though, the only other BP-related item in my possession is 14oz. of Pyrodex P. Now, I’ve got all kinds of stuff, for just about anything which fires lead. (In fact, got an aluminum SCUBA tank for my air rifles, just this past week. The “Hill” hand pump is great for cardio, but filling 3000 pounds of air, in each rifle, is a lot of cardio.) However, as I’m just starting out with black powder, there is much to do, before that particular larder is filled. Fortunately, we’re having a local gun show, this coming weekend. So, will get to go on what I’ve called, “My kind of shopping trip.”

Not real concerned about everything having to happen, all at the same durned time. Have found that savoring the process helps to mediate those residual manic tendencies, remaining from youth. Also, the waiting involved gives me the chance to absorb everything readable about BP. Have already gone through the stickies (thank you, Pancho). So, am now reading back through older posts and Googling like a mad man.

Don’t remember having seen cylinders, or shoulder stocks at the gun shows, though. So, those have been ordered through a couple of different web sites. Yes, am partial receiving ordered items, through the mail.

All in all, have to say that I’m havin’ a ball, so far. And, Dwave, there is not one shred of regret in having gone with the ’58 Remington Old Army. In fact, am happy enough to not care what I’ll be if I grow up. :D

Sounder advice has never been given. In fact, you should hide your wallet should you be in the situation where you are presented with something to buy after a little indulgence. Like the time I went to Walmart with my girlfriend after one or two too many. I ended up with some wierd Sorghum beer that tasted funny.
