By WAYNE PARRY Associated Press Writer
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) -- A 64-year-old police officer just two weeks away from retirement will be promoted to detective after throwing himself in front of a woman and her two young children when a gunman opened fire inside a precinct house.

Michael Gullace, who has spent 38 years on the job, was working a desk shift Wednesday night when he heard gunfire.

Gullace grabbed the gunman's girlfriend and their two young children and threw his body over them. When a detective returning fire at the suspect ran out of bullets, Gullace tossed him his own weapon, enabling the officer to keep firing.

"I thought I was going to go out quietly," Gullace said at a news conference Thursday. "You never know."

The gunman, Corey Harley, 27, who was about to be arrested for domestic violence when he opened fire, was shot numerous times. He was in fair condition Thursday and had not been formally charged.

Two officers were also shot. One was released from the hospital and the other was in good condition. The woman and children were unharmed.

Gullace's promotion to detective will sweeten his pension. In his nearly four decades on the job, he has never had to draw his weapon.

No, no ... he drew it.

But he let the other officer fire it.

Doesn't matter. He did the right thing. I'm glad the department or the community or whoever it was with the idea did the right thing and gave him the promotion.

Thank you, Mr. Gullace.

For all you folks in the "LEO out of control" dogpile, looky here. I am pretty sure that the vast overwhelming majority of cops signed up to get bad guys and protect you and me. While they don't, as I have pointed out here before, have a legal responsibility to protect any individual, they will do so gladly. The problem is the politicization of police protection. There are so many petty offenses on the books that they are instructed to enforce that anyone's behavior can eventually be considered criminal.

Officers on the street are given priorities by their superiors, no? I ain't a cop nor have I personally known one, but I surmise that they are told something along the lines of, "Drive around giving traffic tickets 'til we call you to do something else." If they are called to confront bad guys, the individuals who wear the badge will willingly put themselves in danger to protect us. I appreciate that. I am grateful. I'm still gonna carry a gun, though, 'cause the good men like Michael Gullace might be too far away to help me.

Another parole and probation poster boy, I'd guess.
No, No ... you don't know him at all. He was always such a good boy, never sassed his mother, always cleaned up his room without being aksed (sic) to do it, sang in the church choir. Why, I don't think he even knows how to shoot a gun. The POlice must be makin' this stuff up.

(Perp's mother's unrehearsed comments to the media)

That guy's cool. Most like him are probably also just as cool, and would have done the same thing. They don't ask much, just do their jobs their best all their lives, just really good guys.
