Police shoot man dead outside Henderson elementary school

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) - Police shot and killed a gunman outside a southern Nevada elementary school after the man shot a hostage in a car and walked through the campus looking for a woman, authorities said.

Administrators said 27 children were in an after-school program when the gunman arrived and shots were fired about 4:50 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot at Galloway Elementary School.

Deputy Henderson Police Chief James White said the gunman walked through the campus but did not find a woman picking up her child.

Police characterized the incident as a domestic dispute and Clark County School Superintendent Carlos Garcia said no children were endangered or involved.

However, Nicole Jones, whose 10-year-old son was in the building, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the gunman briefly walked into a room where the children were being watched under the SafeKey program.

"It would have been easy for him to open fire or take any one of those children," Jones said.

The gunman returned to a red sports car before a police hostage and special weapons team used a flash grenade and shot him dead.

Police said they were trying to rescue the hostage.

"We knew there was (another) person in the car. We didn't know his condition, so we knew we had to act as soon as possible," said Officer Shane Lewis, a department spokesman.

Authorities did not say how many shots were fired.

The name of the gunman and the hostage killed in the car were not immediately released.

The officer was placed on administrative leave pending a review of the shooting, His name being withheld for 48 hours under department policy.

Apparently the "No Guns" signs posted at the school were in some language the gunman didn't understand... :scrutiny:
