Any one have experience withe the Ontario Rat 3? I'm thinking of switching from a folder to a fixed for every day carry, looking for a good knife that has a blade no longer than 3 inches. What do you all recommend?

I get that. But I'm in Texas and we can carry on belts without it being concealed as long as it is single edged and under 5 inches. I make holsters and sheathes so what ever dinky thing comes with it I would replace before too long. Just want to know if I'm looking at the right thing or if there is a better knife out there?

Everyday use, opening boxes, cutting rope, tape, cutting sticks down for fire, bushcraft. I'm not looking to carry more than one knife, and I want something big enough for the outdoors, but small enough for everyday use

The Rat 3 is one of several good choices along with the same size ESEE 3 and Izula, KaBar Becker Necker and Eskabar, various Blind Horse, etc.

Skip the Rat 3 and buy the better made ESEE-3. It's the same knife with a better heat treat and a better warranty (lifetime, unconditional).

Randal's Adventure Training (RAT) designed the RAT series of knives for Ontario. There was a dispute, so RAT Cutlery split from Ontario and started selling their own knives (same design as Ontario, but built at Rowen manufacturing) with an unconditional lifetime warranty. There was another dispute over their name, so now they are ESEE Knives.

The ESEE-3 is a fantastic knife. I have 3 of them, and use them constantly. I wear one almost every day, on a Tekok under an untucked t-shirt.

If you are going to pocket carry, get the version with a rounded pommel, it will be less likely to rub a hole in your pocket than the spikey standard pommel.

I have the ESEE 3 and like it. It's light, flat, stout. Comes with a kydex sheath that can be used in several ways. Mine is set up with clip for IWB carry. One of my favorite small fixed blades.

If you want a nice fixed edc, head over to Bladeforums and look through the maker's market. You will be amazed at what you can get for under $100. I just picked up one from TRC Knives that is everything you're looking for. For $70 including shipping. There are many fine makers that put out incredible blades for very reasonable prices: Alan Davis, Eliot, BaCustoms, etc. I've all but stopped buying production fbs unless I really want something to abuse.

Not that the Esee isn't a fine knife, it is. But it's also clunky and overpriced (I think).

esee 3 has a blade that is a little over 3 3/4 inches op wants a blade no longer than 3 inches for reasons he does not reveal, the midget wanted to know what the knife would be used for.op wants it to be his carry knife

Not trying to spend your money, but an option is a small "personal knife" made by Bob Dozier. He routinely sells a few knives on his website that I suspect were ordered but something happened and the buyer opted out. I have the K-42 personal that uses a horizontal sheath (very nice) and it quite concealable or at least not very conspicuous on your belt. I got it at the Blade Show from Bob and like it a lot, but since I have moved to a smart phone (and joined the current century), I have a little trouble finding a place for it on my belt since I need to carry my cell phone pretty much at all times.

I purchased it to be one of my EDC's. It will probably become one soon.

We have several custom knife makers as members that can provide what you're looking for. 2 of them have given us group buys of several knives in this specific category.

Search for Group Buy and look at Kim Breed and Gary Wheeler pocket fixed blade knives and PM them for an order or check with any of the other makers posting here.
