Tonite was my third week of NRA Bullseye and I really couldnt be more pleased with my performance. I posted last week about not doing real good, so I went out again this week and put some serious practice in. It paid off.

These numbers may not be super impressive to some, but I couldnt be prouder. :D I shot an 84 in slow fire, a 91 in 20 second timed, and a 86 in 10 second timed. Yup, thats a 261. Most of the other competitors are shooting with red dots, I am shooting a pre lock 686 with irons.

On the downside, I had one guy who was a world class jerk accuse me of sandbagging, as my timed fires were both higher than slow fire. :fire::cuss:

My team captain said screw him, he is just upset that he shot a 253 with a Colt Gold Cup and a red dot.:neener:

Well done. Thanks for the update. It gives gives me warm fuzzies when a revolver shooter is able to hang!

I suspect that's not uncommon. So long as you're not sandbagging, don't let sour grapes slow you down or limit your potential. Life's too short to give that kind of power to others. :cool:

Not bad. You might want to try for Distinguished Revolver.

Thank you! I was under the impression that it was only open to LEO?

Thanks! As long as it doesnt bother anyone here I was going to make a thread each week and give the details, it gives me somewhere to let it out. My wife is entirely supportive and is a great help to me, but its nice to have a place with fellow competitors to talk to.

I dont really mind the accusation of sandbagging, I dont think anyone took him real serious, like I said, my team captain told me its because I outshot him with, at least in the other guys opinion, an inferior gun and setup. Im really just there for fun, but I do want to be the best I can be.

I am thinking about moving to a red dot, but I want to make sure that I can be consistent before I do that.

Cool. I'll admit I don't shoot bullseye, but not for lack of interest, so I'll follow your updates.

I love shooting revolvers, and I'm an accuracy nut, but time available to shoot matches is limited, so I chose to focus mainly on IDPA (using a 686 as well :cool:) and some USPSA (with a 625). I still work on target accuracy regularly, but incorporate it into my range sessions. I'll also break out my 10m air pistol at home now and then. One of these days I'll try bullseye myself, but until then, maybe I'll pick up a tidbit or 2 from your updates. ;)

BTW, is your 686 a 6" or 4"? Do you shoot double or single action? Or a combo - SA for SF and DA for TF/RF? Just curious.

Well, actually its my <cough> wifes <cough>686, its a 686-3 with a 4" barrel. I bought it for her for valentines day 2010. Because of its age its a no-lock model with a hammer mounted firing pin. Its a great shooter. I do practice alot of dlouble action, but I shoot single action in competition, except RF this week, as does pretty much everyone else in our league.

If you ever get a chance to try it, go for it, its fun as heck!

I remember my Bullseye days back in the 1970's, shooting a M28 in competition for the center fire match. Great fun. Always looked forward to weekly club shoots with the 22lr. There were shooters with very different skill levels, so we use a scoring system or handicap. Worked well. Click photo for larger view.

243, we run a handicap system too. I guess thats why the accusations of sandbagging were made. I dont totally understand all the different scoring but the way I understand it is that I make more points for the team if I shoot a low average then slowly bring it up, at least thats the way it seems by the way its been explained to me. I actually had a member of my team try to give me help on sandbagging to "help" the team. I guess its a pretty widespread thing, though they say on the rules that if you are caught doing such a thing you are kicked out, the whole team, so its kept pretty quiet. I dont want any part of it, I am just there for the fun

LJ;

Are you shooting an indoor or outdoor at 25 yrds or an actual 50yd slow fire and 25 yrd timed and rapid ?

(25yd in 20sec is called timed fire)
(25yd in 10 sec is called rapid fire)

D.R. is shot outdoors and at 50 yds for slow fire.
Your score is very good with a .38 revolver.

Keep working at it.

We are shooting outdoor, 25 yards for all shots fired. Thank you for the compliment, I am proud but i know that I can do more. Do you think its too early for me to move to a red dot? I am afraid my consistency isnt there and I will use it as a crutch. I want to progress. DR sounds pretty cool, I routinely practice at 50 yards for the last few years, I think thats helped me a lot in bullseye at 25 yards. In fact, I shoot with "the old man brigade" as they call themselves at my gun club every friday. We shoot at clays on the 100 yard berm on the rifle range. Now we dont do it offhand, we do it from a sitting postition, no rest, and its a hoot too. I initially started this to replace action pistol because of my handicapped situation, but to be honest, I am enjoying it more than I did action pistol.

LJ;

If you really want to get into the discipline of bullseye shooting, get a .22 such as a Ruger or S&W M41 and mount a 1" Ultradot.

Learn to shoot it and if bullseye is for you then you can get a .45 to shoot both the center fire and .45 matches with it.

I have been shooting Bullseye for about 4 years now, stuck in upper expert class, knocking on the door of master.

I also shoot 10m air pistol and 50m free pistol, both with open sights.
This really helps with focus on the sights and trigger control.

Bullseye is ALL about trigger control.

Quite frankly, pistol shooting is ALL about sight alignment whether it be with iron or dot sights and trigger control.

Right now the only league around me is the one I am shooting in, and its centerfire only. If I could find a league that did it with rimfire and two centerfire I would definately do it.

I actually was thinking about using a 45 to shoot in this league, I have several 1911s that are "more than stock" but something about that 686 and S&W trigger just call to me. I gotta admit, I am a revolver junkie and love to shoot one. I used to be the other way around, until my back injury. It became difficult to chase brass so I started buying revolvers and never looked back.

LJ;

To be totally honest, you will not score as good with a revolver than a well tuned bullseye .45.

Not many pistols out of the box will shoot at 50 yds acuratly exept for a Rock river which is as scarce as hens teeth.(had one and sold it after having a wad gun built).

What many people see as a good group with there .45 custom whatever pistol is not even close to a custom built bullseye pistol(night and day).

I am only saying this cause I have seen and personally gone through it.

Do not kid yourself, and I will not kid you, if you are a serious bullseye shooter you will find out that I am telling the truth.

As far as chasing your brass, you can use a brass catcher.

This bullsey conversation can get long, if you have any questions just email me or call me.

I believe you entirely, no doubt. I do love using that revolver though. Right now its just for fun, I am going to see where it leads me. If I get deeper into it, then it will be time to start looking at other guns, etc. Right now, I am just having a great time with it.

Good

Congrats. Ya did good.
About that jerk....
On the downside, I had one guy who was a world class jerk accuse me of sandbagging, as my timed fires were both higher than slow fire.

Sustained fire scores (timed and rapid) are almost always higher than slow fire. Masters regularly clean targets in these stages; not so regularly do we see clean slow fire stages.
So...the guy was off on more than one level.
Keep shootin'.
Pete

Well, after a great day of practice(shot an informal with four buddies) I decided my scores were where I set the bar, so here it is:
