I did it tonite! I have said all along that my goal in this season, being my first for bullseye, that I would love to shoot a 270. I did it tonite! I hit a 273! Slow fire I managed a 91 1x, Timed fire was a 93 2x, and Rapid fire was a 89 2x. I wish I wouldnt have dropped the few on Rapid fire that I did, or else it would have been even higher!

Now that I am done bragging we can get back to the usual grind around here.

Outstanding for sure. I'd be especially proud of that slow-fire 91! I don't come close.

Thanks guys! We have five more matches this season I think. I am thinking about setting a new goal of 280 before the end of the season, but not sure if its attainable.

Excellent! Congrats. Good luck on your 280. Your THR buds are pulling for you. :D

Great

Great stuff. Expert score. That is what happens.....you keep at it and scores go up. The 280 will come to you.

An old Bullseye adage: "Win it in slow fire; lose it in rapid."
Pete
PS: something to aspire to....John Zurek at Camp Perry this year. 893/900 - 35X.

Excellent. You will now be hooked. There is no escape. I got my NRA Expert card in conventional pistol in 1993, and am still chasing Master. Bullseye is the skill; everything else is just games.

Thanks! To tell you the truth, I have been hooked since the first match! I had been really missing the competition aspect of it, since my back injury. This gets me out there, and actually inspired me to try IDPA again, even though the Dr. told me that it was out of the question.

I always considered myself a good shot, and I guess the scores would back that up, but I didnt realize how hard it was to hit that bull under pressure, and under a timer. Its definately a game of true skill.

Well, its tuesday again, another night of bullseye. Hopefully this week follows last week and I have another great score. Seems like when I make a big gain I follow it with an off week. Have to wait this one out and see.

You really might want to read Lanny Bassham's book, With Winning in Mind.

It'll help you dump that poor attitude, and give you the tools to see yourself as someone who does well because it's "like you to do well".

By the way . . . this -

I always considered myself a good rifle shot. These NRA competitions are humbling. But I'm a much better rifle shot today than I ever was twenty years ago in the Marines, when it was my job to be good with a rifle, because of the competitive rifle shooting disciplines.

And I'll bet you are a better pistol shot today than you were before you put yourself through this challenge, too.

+1. It's a must-read. Gotta work on your mental game, too. If your self-image or subconscious isn't on board with your goals, they'll undermine your best efforts every chance they get.

Well, I did pretty good tonite. Shot my second best score, a 268. I fell short of the 270 mark that I broke last week. I was really shaky today, not sure if it was the half gallon of Mt Dew I drank today(I know, I knew better, not sure why I even did it, I was almost all the way through it before I smacked my head) or just a bad case of nerves.

You guys are absolutely right, see again what I said above. I think it was nerves tonite. A half hour after we were done, I was calm as could be. I am going to try and find that book tonite online. This is why I come to THR, for good advice and for the few chances I get an opportunity to chip in and help someone else.

I have definately improved. Like I said, I always considered myself good, comparing to people that shot at my club. This is a whole different kind of humbling though, and it has really helped to make me a better shooter.

See, another good score.

Get that book. I downloaded it to our Kindle and read it there, so it is available electronically.

Yep, the competitor in me says "I could have done better, it wasnt a 273" but the realistic side of me knows that I had a good night anyway, hit my second best ever, and was proud of the score anyway.

I ordered that book. I'm a hardcover freak, so it will be a few days before I get it. I googled Lanny Bassham and after reading about him I am really interested in reading the book. Thanks for the recomendation!

Go to Brian Zins website and read his tutorials on grip, trigger control, using red dot sights, etc. keep an eye on his Bullseye Clinics schedule that he does with Andy Moody. When there is one near you, go. Most matches the USMC Pistol Team from Quantico attends will have a clinic with one-on-one coaching by their team members. Check their website. Lots of great help available. Probably the only sport in the world where we coach up our competitors so they will beat us!

Time to move up to the 45

Actually, I have been thinking about it, just not sure if I have the money to make the jump. I mean, I already own several 45s, but none of them are what I would consider bullseye guns. I have been considering getting a new Ruger SR1911. Its definately more of a bullseye gun than my RIA compact 1911, glock 21, or xd45. I was considering picking one up and having it drilled and tapped for a frame mount for a red dot. Still kicking that around though.
