First of all, I'm quite thankful that the lawmakers in the State of Oklahoma have the wisdom to allow "qualified" individuals to carry concealed handguns. However, I have a few gripes about the laws as they are now.
Here's a perfect example. A CCW permit holder may drive onto shool property with his/her loaded handgun(s) ONLY to pick up or drop off his/her kids. You are not allowed to leave the handgun in the vehicle unattended. Nor are you allowed to carry the gun away from your vehicle. This creates all kinds of problems for me. I drive about 10 miles (one way) to pick up my kids from school (ages 5 and 8). Often, I'm required to go into the school building and pick them up.
Obviously, I believe I should be allowed to carry the gun while I walk in to pick up my kids. For one thing - I don't like leaving my gun in the truck when I'm not around the truck - not to mention that it would be a felony to do so at a school.
Oklahoma law does do a really good job at protecting the rights of CCW holders to leave guns in vehicles while they (ccw holders) enter "gun free zones". However, this makes no sense to me as I feel that leaving guns in vehicles is sort of like asking for a gun theft. It's much too easy to break into a vehicle and steal a gun or just steel the vehicle than it would be to take the gun from me.
I'm one of these guys that does obey like to obey the law - even when it hurts and makes no sense. On those days I go into town to pick up my kids - I don't carry concealed. I was just sort of wondering how many other folks out there have similar situations/problems with their daily carry routines?
