I really like the marlin 1894, I've had several and want to recommend one to anybody and everybody, but my new one made by remington was garbage. I sent it back to the factory and they scrapped the whole gun. (supposedly sending a new one, but it's not here yet) Over on marlinowners they don't have anything good to say about the remington made guns of the past year or so.

If you can find a used one, buy it. If you can look one over before you buy, go for it. If you're buying sight unseen off the internet, look into rossi or somebody else.

I really preferred my 357 to my 44mag, but I wasn't hunting with wither of them.

I prefer the Rossi/Puma lever guns over the Marlins. And yes I have owned and shot a Marlin in .44Mag. Was a nice (Cowboy Limited) gun but prefer the action and lines of a 1892. They both shoot the Ranch Dog 265gr bullets really well.

I used to have a 1894 in 44mag with the microgroove barrel. It was a great gun but too expensive for me to shoot right now. I also have a 1894 in .357 which is almost as fun to shoot but a little cheaper.

I've had my Winchester 94 Trapper in 44 Mag for 17 years and like it fine.

I had a Rossi M92 clone in 45 Colt and it was good, too, so I figure one in 44 Mag would also work well.

The Marlins are well made. I have heard some complaints over the years about the Marlin barrels and disappointing accuracy but I have no specific info. Some said it was the rate of twist others say it was the "Micro Groove" rifling. I personally would never use a 44 bullet as heavy as 300 grains so no matter to me, anyhow.

Oh, someone described the 30-30 Winchester as a "light rifle cartridge." I would not concur with calling a full sized 30 caliber round "light."

Had the Marlin 44 for several years and never got along with it. There was a 180 gr load that it liked very much. Anything else and I couldn't keep it on a paper plate at 100 yards. It was a disaster with cast bullets of any kind. I own Marlins in 45-70, 35 Rem, 32 Soecial and 30-30. All have ballard style rifling and shoot like dreams and so I have determined that I have no use for Microgroove. As for the 44, I picked up a Henry and never looked back. It shoots rings around my 44 Marlin.

I have a model 94 in .444 and that is a fun gun to shoot. The only down side to the .444 is the cost of ammo and how hard it is to find. But I hand load so I don't mind. I have never shot a marlin but on another forum I visit they seem to think the micro groove is no problem. But they slug their barrels and cast for their size.
