Ok, here's what I want

1. Remington
2. 12 gauge
3. pump
4. wood (fancy or otherwise)
5. 18" bbl for HD and something rifled for deer slugs in case I ever learn to hunt (it's in the cards, believe me)

What's your recommendation? The website has me a bit turned around :uhoh:

Unless you left something out, I assume you are not eligible to purchase a law enforcement grade weapon. Your requirements listed pretty much limit you to a Rem 870 pump shotgun. The 870 come in a wide assortment of grades, styles, barrel lengths, both left and right hand actions. You should be able to find one that will fit your needs. It is the most widely owned and produced shotgun in the country, so it must have something going for it.

Wish Remington offered the combo guns (with 2 barrels) like Mossberg - - which seems much less expensive than buying an extra barrel. I'd like the 18" bbl and one for skeet/dove. But I'd go with Remington, if the money is reasonably close - -mainly b/c I already have 2 of their autoloaders.

Want my wife to be comfortable with this HD gun, and considered 20ga, but decided to go with 12ga and investigate shells with reduced recoil. Not minishells, but 2-3/4 shells with reduced muzzle velocity (~1140 fps for 00buckshot).

Heyyy, THANKS! Dunno how, but I missed these on their website. Downside is less capacity, slightly longer HD barrel, and $$$. But you've shown me more choices to consider :)

Trust me, hunter 55, a civvie can own any 870, LE or not. You can even own a barrel shorter than 18" provided your state allows it and you pay the tax and do the paperwork.

An 870Police is seen by the ATF same as an 870 Express. There are small differences in construction and quality, but both are extremely good weapons.

A couple things....

First, while some 870s are prettier than others, there's no BAD 870s out there.

Even nasty looking Police turnins have decades of use left in them.

Secondly, lots of the roughly ten million (10,000,000) 870s out there are for sale, including ancient but sound Wingmasters with long, well wrought barrels..

Buying one of these and adding a second barrel will save something over a new combo.

A 2 3/4" chambered 870s will do what you need, sans turkey and waterfowl.

One of my favorite barrels is the 20" "rifle sighted" smoothbore, with or without Remchokes. It should shoot slugs well and do good work with the right load of buck.

One of these plus a longer barrel with a bit of choke or Remchokes pretty much covers all the bases.

HTH....

Dave - Sounds like another very good option. If you were looking for a used 870 where you go and not go to find a good deal? Also for the other barrel?

Go with a 20" barrel and a 7+1 extended magazine.
I recomend the Tac Star extension or, if you are a physician, the Nordic extension. Slug sights are great for slugs but for shot, a bright neon red or green light pipe like Hi-Viz makes is superior.

BTG,best place to find a decent 870 is your range. Local gun shops come in second.

Unfortunately, gun shows have few bargains these days. Still they may be worth a try.

As for barrels, same places and the Net.

HTH....

Very true. My little 20" smoothe bore is putting brenneke KOs in an inch-and-a-half circle at 50 yards with irons. Hoping itll pattern nice and tight with my turkey choke too, sure would be a lot handier than my 28" tube...

Your best deals will most likely come from these boards or local sources. Last gun show I was at (chantilly), they were asking $195(marked UP from $175) for some beat-to-hell trade-ins. I might have given them $195 for the whole lot of them.
