Portsmouth Police Charge Man, Clear Woman, After Saturday Night Gun Battle

Portsmouth police have cleared a woman, and charged a man, after a gun battle Saturday night.

Police arrested 33-year old Emmitt M. Warren of the 1800 block of Richmond Avenue after he was released from the hospital Wednesday morning where he was being treated for gunshot wounds.

According to police, a 25-year old Portsmouth woman was driving home Saturday night around 11:30pm with her two children when she noticed a vehicle following her.

When she arrived at her residence on Georgia Court in the Peachtree section of the city, the woman says she saw Warren exit the vehicle, display a handgun, and start running towards her in a threatening manner.

The woman, who was also armed, pulled her own gun and fired shots at Warren, striking him in the leg.

Police say Warren dropped his own gun, got back in the vehicle, and fled.

He was eventually located by police shortly after the incident, and identified by the woman. Warren was then taken to the hospital for treatment.

The woman's two children were not hurt during the incident.

The woman's handgun was legally registered, and authorities have determined she acted in self-defense.

Police say the gun used by Warren was stolen.

He is facing three charges, including attempt to kill, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

I hope she was just scared or a bad shot. She only hit the legs. ;)

Otherwise, good shoot. Glad no one but the BG got hurt. Very glad, (as I'm sure she was), that she was carrying.

Leftist extremist so-called "gun control" has nothing and less than nothing to do with safety or crime, and everything to do with advancing the cause of socialism. It's all about power.

I hope the perpetrator gets a long, long prison sentence, including some extra years for the stolen gun.

BTW, A lesson learned here, Ladies (and Gentlemen)

"According to police, a 25-year old Portsmouth woman was driving home Saturday night around 11:30pm with her two children WHEN SHE NOTICED A VEHICLE FOLLOWING HER."

.........ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings, it helps cut down on 'surprises'...........

Having noticed being followed, my hand would have been on the firearm prior to stepping out of the vehicle.

Seeing the perp exit his vehicle waving a gun in a threatening manner , would most definitely get him shot

Way things are going these days, he'll probably get probation and she'll end-up doing life.

Drive to the police station and you will be safe= NOT

just a few months ago we had a lady with a protective order against her X a sometimes hunter who legally owned 1 remington 870 SG, his only firearm.

She drove to the Police station, in broad daylight because the X was following her. He shot her dead, and committed suicide right on the front steps of the police station with his 870.

Had she been armed, she might have had a chance.

The ironic thing is that the SG was stored at the woman's house, and the X-husband went there to get it out of a closet, when she was not there. The police knew about the gun and had an order to confiscate it since the X had threatened to shoot her with it in front of many witnesses.

The police searched the apartment where he lived and could not find it two weeks before the shooting.

And another family saved by an adult with a gun. But it will go unnoticed...just like all the others. Ironic to think that if she hadn't been armed, and this guy slaughtered them all with his gun, it would be another cry for gun control to save the children...but as the story aptly demonstrates, there was only one thing that could save those children.

That woman and her gun.

Point taken MB.

However, whether you are armed or not, I do think going to a police station will tilt things in your favor. All but the most determined will be loath to do anything there and you don't lead them to where you live so they can come back at their leisure.

My sister has been followed before and she knew not to just drive home. She called us on her cell and told us where she was. We went to meet her with a 9mm, but the person following her lost interest before we got to her. If she had gone home, the guy could have comeback anytime or watched her patterns, etc.

Pendragon, I've been told that too and I thot about it AFTER I hit sent, whereever ya go, BE ARMED :)

Going to the police station is a strangely British way of dealing with the situation. Police officers are excitable and unpredicatable at best, and rarely helpful unless you have noisy neighbor problems.

Driving up to a police station and then pulling out a gun is a good way of getting shot by THEM.

I was going to say, "not around here she won't", but then I realized it wasn't Portsmouth NH. I suppose the "legally registered" part should have tipped me off.

Forgive me if I sound like a one trick pony, bragging about NH all the time, but I like to think it gives the rest of you some hope.

Interesting that it doesn't say if she was legally carrying, or had to go into the house to retrieve the weapon, or was carrying in the car (not sure if this is legal in NH).

I may be biased, but it seems that the liberal media will bend over backwards to avoid describing a CCW holder using their weapon to thwart crime!:fire:

whereever ya go, BE ARMED

I sure wish it were that easy. :(

But for the next 17 months, I can either live as a sub-human without a right to self-defense, or carry a handgun "illegally."

I don't like either.

*sigh*

Greyhound, this was not Portsmouth NH, but rather Virginia (check out the front page at http://www.wavy.com/ ).

In NH you must have a carry permit (very easy to get) to keep a loaded handgun where the driver can reach it. This may be more restrictive than some states, but it is consistent anyway, as a gun in a car is concealed from someone outside the car.
