Mother shoots gunman in self defense

August 13, 2003

By Dottie Wikan, WVEC.com

A woman fought back rather than become a gunman’s victim.

The 25-year-old Portsmouth mother had her two children with her late Saturday night. She'd been grocery shopping and noticed that she’d been followed home.

She'd gotten out of the car and the man approached her and showed that he had a gun. She pulled her .40 calibre gun and shot him twice in the right leg. He got back in his car, drove off but was caught a block or so away.

The suspect, 33-year-old Emmitt Warren, was arrested after being released from the hospital. He's charged with attempt to kill and firearms charges.

The woman won't be charged. An investigation showed her gun was licensed and that she acted in self defense.

There are three rules to defensive shooting--SHOT PLACEMENT, SHOT PLACEMENT, and SHOT PLACEMENT. She should've aimed for the head.

There are three rules for criminals: Stay the hell out of VA, FL, and TX! We are armed, and we aren't shy about using the death penalty!

Hmmmmm, Idjit reporter?!? We don't license guns in VA, but we do issue CCW permits. I wish these guys would try a llittle harder to get it right.:banghead:

TarpleyG,
Chances are, she was right handed. The two shots to the guy's right leg would not have been intentional leg shots. More than likely, is was discharge anticipatory flinch. She was probably aimed COM and the best she got was right leg. If she aimed for the head, about the best she would have gotten was a shoulder hit.

On top of that, the desired result was attained and that was stopping the aggressive actions of the bad guy. It may not have been pretty, but she managed to defend three people (herself and two kids) and win her first gun fight. Unfortunately, many people don't.

Mike, they report like this partly out of ignorance and partly because it reads smooth to a sheep. Good guys license their guns right? It's pervasive, folks ask me all the time how to register their guns. Recently I added to my speeding ticket collection while open carrying. The deputy asked me if I had "papers" for it on me. In a way to let him know it wasn't a question I said "I don't need any papers, do I?" I resisted further comments since the roadside ain't the arguing spot. (Papers? We don neeed no steenkin papers! :D) Once everyone reads "properly licensed" enough times they will gasp in horror when a bill finally comes around to license them. "*GASP*, I thought we already had that! Pass that bill Mr. it's for the children!"

I don't got enough Alcoa stock to believe that journalism schools teach Intro to pre-Stalinist takeover Mind Control; but you gotta admit the rags write this kinda story up just about the same anywhere you go.

Stories like this always make me wonder how long he'd been out on parole. He's probably already counting the days until he's paroled again.

It may sound insensitive to some (non gun types mainly) but .. I'm afraid 2 COM + one head would indeed have been well appropriate ... and - deserved.

Meet deadly force .............. with deadly force ......... QED. Now it's a tax burden!:(

Big Mistake... When he gets out he will most likely pay her a visit, he knows where she lives.

I agree Two in the chest and one in the head.

One major mistake. They caught him before he bled to death. :(
